its probably not the first thread about that but i couldnt find one so... i wanna buy a swix iron but im not sure what to buy. on the swix website and there's like 6 different models which one should i get?

the more expensive irons usually have a digital temperature reading instead of a turning knob. IMO just get the cheapest swix iron that is available.

there might be a bunch of people on here that will disagree with me, but I just went to the DI (equivalent of goodwill elsewhere, except its better), and bought a used iron with a dial on it, and you can just use that instead. just make sure you have a temperature where it will melt the wax, but wont burn it (if you see smoke, you're burning it). i just made a mark on the dial of my cheap iron i bought where it seems to be the right temperature, and turn it to that each time, and adjust accordingly

This.

Don't waste your money on a Swix iron. Really. Just get any dry-iron. Pretty much all models have a turning knob with 3 dots. Puts it on the second dot. I think it's just a standardized scale or something. I've used a LOT of irons and all were perfect at the second dot.

the swix irons are complete shit. i had one and it took 20 minutes to heat up so i said fuck it, went to a garage sale, bought a shitty iron for $3. said $3 iron heats up in 30 seconds. fuck yeah

a salesperson in a ski shop said if you use an iron with holes in the bottom you pull out your edges or something, so that's why you needed a swix iron. anyone heard of this?

That's not true. The advantages of a good Swix iron ($50+) are many. For example, on the basic ones you get to set the temperature and the surface temperature is more consistent across the entire surface. This last part is crucial because you don't want to overheat your base and melt it and cheap irons will have different temperatures (high and low) across their surface.

You spent a lot of money on your new fancy skis. Buy the proper tools to ensure they last a long time and ride to their full potential.
