Switch into rails then switching

whats up with people going switch into boxes and rails and at the last minute switching to forward? i know its cool because people like tom wallisch do it but i was just wondering if it was just something that looks cool or if it a trick.

it's a butter onto a box/rail. not really hard, just looks cool if you do it right

i saw someone doing these a really long time ago in my gaper years and i thought he was getting scared of hitting the rail switch
