This is a huge day for the United States.

President Obama ‏@POTUS3m3 minutes ago

Today is a big step in our march toward equality. Gay and lesbian couples now have the right to marry, just like anyone else. #LoveWins

And just in case you don't believe me...
http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/14pdf/14-556_3204.pdf

Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, and Tennessee define marriage as a union

between one man and one woman. The petitioners, 14 same-sex couples

and two men whose same-sex partners are deceased, filed suits

in Federal District Courts in their home States, claiming that respondent

state officials violate the Fourteenth Amendment by denying

them the right to marry or to have marriages lawfully performed

in another State given full recognition. Each District Court ruled in

petitioners’ favor, but the Sixth Circuit consolidated the cases and

reversed.

Held: The Fourteenth Amendment requires a State to license a marriage

between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage

between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully

licensed and performed out-of-State.

In this day and age where there is so much negativity against the government, this makes me especially happy and proud.

USA USA USA USA USA

this is great but before we start chanting let's as a country stop the perpetual wars we're apart of...

Utah had a real bitch fit when the court made the same ruling, so hopefully most states accept the fact that its a new day and age, and religious influence has no place in politics.

This is something that has the potential to bring people from all sides of the political spectrum together. Like I said, in a time where politics are so separated, we really needed this.

it's just one less issue to divide people in the next election

If you actually read the judgment there are some fairly hilarious bits in there. This is from Roberts's dissent:

"the Court invalidates the marriage laws of more than half the States and orders the transformation of a social institution that has formed the basis of human society for millennia, for the Kalahari Bushmen and the Han Chinese, the Carthaginians and the Aztecs. Just who do we think we are?"

YEAH, YOU TELL 'EM JOHN! How dare we, the United States Supreme Court, question the wisdom and unfailing moral compass of the Aztecs? Holy Quetzalcoatl has decreed that marriage shall be between a man and a woman, and if it's good enough for the feathered serpent it's good enough for me!

Now, the virgins are almost here, where's my sacrificial dagger... knew I left it around here somewhere...

Fucking homoseshuals.

Adam and eve not adam and steve. It's pretty sad how far the US has fallen away from what this country was founded on. We've turned our back on god. That's why we're seeing things like massive earthquakes and hurricanes. God's giving us a chance to repent of our since and we throw it in our face.

I don't hate gay people but marriage is a religious institution. Now the sanctity of marriage is out the window. What's next? A guy marrying a horse? His car? two cats getting married?

Also it's obvious that this wasn't what God intended both by reading in the bible where it clearly states that and because gay people can't reproduce. It isn't natural, it's a sin. I hope we can keep up the good fight and get this reversed.

This is the most pressing issue in our time.

I'm almost positive you're trolling here, but I'm going to refute this argument anyway, as I see it all the time. In fact, frenchy (of all people) just argued this point on twitter, using marriage between a human and a dog as an example. This was my response:

"Show me consensual, true love between a dog and a human, and then this argument will be valid."

I would love to hear a counter argument if anyone wants to chime in. I just have to laugh whenever someone tries the "what's next" argument.

It's funny that we know gay people exist but deny them the right to marry on the off chance that it may piss God off who we know doesn't exist.

Too much of a bitch to troll with your real account?

And good, needed to happen, marriage didnt stem from christianity nor do they get to define it. so long as churches arent forced to marry gay couples i think both sides should be happy, a true christian would be.

Wasn't really trolling just moving beyond all the bullshit from all these years with word/ being excited.

My parents who don't have much money, def not any to waste, have been sending money to campaigns to stop this day from coming. To them this was the good fight. If gay people could get married the world would stop turning. All other issues we face were small compared to making sure the "sanctity of marriage" was protected.

It's sad that it took so long for us to get here. But I'm happy we made it. Being gay isn't a sin, a disease, kids trying to rebel against their parents or whatever.

People don't wake up one day and "choose to live the gay lifestyle". Sure gay people could live a the "normal" godly lifestyle and pretend they aren't gay, pop out some kids, and try to keep that marriage together but it's a sham.

If I ever get married I would hope that my parents and family would come but I'm not holding out too much hope at least for my parents. It's 2015 but religion still comes before family or reason.

Idk if I'll ever settle down like that but it's cool to have that as an option.

Hoping at some point where being gay is seen as normal. There's not nearly as much hate surrounding it but it's far from being excepted. There was an account on here some of you might remember, maybe before other were on here "AskAGaySkier". Basically somebody that was gay but in the closet because they thought coming out would hurt maybe ruin their career in the ski industry. Things like that are very sad. When you have people hiding who they are just so they get treated normally.

When at a new job you debate trying to fly under the radar and go along with/ignore anything that comes up about girls, or be honest. I've never been one of those people that put's it in anyones face, but sometimes things come up about girls etc and it sucks to dance around that instead of just being honest. At the same time I remember one mtn I worked at where the park manager and his gaper friend(also on the crew) went to douche level 10 on the subject. Talking all kinds of shit, actually telling kids not to hang out with me because I was gay, things like that.

Idk, just hoping we get to a point where it's not an issue. Then again it's still a huge battle with race as well. There will always be ignorant motherfuckers, but it's nice to see some movement in the right direction.

If any of you are honestly outraged by this news, and getting heated inside. Find a new hobby. You aren't going to win, and it's really not worth fighting the "I'm entitled to my bigotry" battle for the rest of your life. I don't wish anything bad on you just that maybe at some point in your life you'll see this as less of/or a non issue.

Wall O text that nobody gonnnaaaaaaa read. But I feel better.

Sparknotes: stoked

so glad this happened. When my mom came out 18 years ago things were really shitty for gay people. I was actually teased for having a lesbian mom and I was ashamed and embarrassed but at the same time I was proud of her. also, around 1999, a school board in my area actually banned books from the library that were about families with gay parents. I think we still have a long ways to go though.

I'm just so excited to see my friends get married and aaaaaaaah!!!

Now to see what happens with Wisconsin and their nutjob govener.

The only thing I'll ever judge you for is snowboarding.

Good news indeed. This country still has a lot of work to do to insure religious and personal freedom but it's a step in the right direction.

well one thing we need to realize is the decision was still really close. only passed by one vote. So it is still a very disputed topic and we have a long way to go till it really is marriage equality in anything other than law.

Other than that can we talk about how much a dick Scalia is? Seriously.

i mean kind of, no one can really appeal it but congress and they don't have the votes for that. If a state decides its not going to honor the ruling, it won't last for long.

by the first stanza I meant that just because it is a law doesnt mean everyone will accept it socially.
