Sun Valley Living

I tried searching this but had no luck, so sorry if this has already been a post.

ANYWAY!

Im curious as to what Sun Valley is like as a year round place to live. Ive never visited and have actually never even been to Idaho, but I've seen ski edits shot there and I get these hella rad vibes and am feeling this little pull for some reason that I can't explain. Im a 23 y/o chick from Michigan originally and Ive been up in Steamboat CO for about 4 years now and wouldn't mind a little change in scenery. Ive done some research on the area, but actual help from residents is obviously way more beneficial.

Some of the things I'm curious on includes the resort obviously and what they have for parks, Colleges in or really close by (interested in photography courses/degree), the people, cost of living, the town in general, weather/climate, is it a huge tourist destination, events and things to do in the summer months, and really just anything!

PM me or feel free to shoot me a text and tell me all about why SV is rad! (or not rad?) Thanks NS!

Yo I live in Pocatello and have visited SV countless times so IM gonna give you as much insight as possible..

SV as year round place to live would be so rad. They have so much to offer in summer and winter activities and the surrounding areas and mountains are so sick. The sawtooth range is just awesome and places like Redfish are really cool as well. Its a really cool place.

So SV as a ski resort is split up in to two mountains, Baldy and Dollar. Dollar is pretty much pure park. Baldy is pretty much pure groomer/all mountain shredding. Unfortunately they are two completely different mountains so you can't really ski park and all mtn unless you go over to the other mountain which some people do. Really fun mountains though either way.

So there is not a single college or university in SV and the closest would probably be Boise State. What sucks is that BSU is like 2h 30min away from SV. So maybe online classes or taking winter semesters off would be an option?

Most the people are pretty cool, BUT SV is a very very very resort rich town. IM not saying that all rich people are stuck up, because thats not true at all, but I have encountered a few snobby people, but for the majority its all good. A lot of people in SV are vacationers as well so its pretty diverse.

The cost of living is pretty high. Things in SV are just more expensive. Im sure theres a way to keep costs low and manageable but I really haven't looked in to it, but I'm sure its more pricey than average.

The town in general is really fun. Lots to do and just fun stuff.

Weather is Idaho, so its kinda iffy like a lot of places but you can expect it to get pretty warm in the summer and pretty chilly in the winter.

Hope I helped a little bit and if you have anymore questions let me know!:)

Idaho is undeniably the raddest state in the union, so don't come here!

As Lencon said, not much in the way of colleges in resort towns usually. BSU is probably your best bet.

If you're looking for the pure ski town/college experience I'd recommend Bozeman (MSU, Big Sky and Bridger)

If you like Idaho you could do college in Spokane, Washington and ski Schweitzer which is not too far away.

Good Luck!

Wow wow this was super helpful thank you!!

The idea of the two mtns split up is kinda cool. Are they on one pass or do you have to pay separately for them?

I live in Steamboat Springs so I know all about the resort living life.

Is it like most other resort towns where theres not a whole lot of chain stores and its all pretty touristy? and would Boise be the nearest big city? Thats how Steamboat is, If you need to shop its either online or a 4 hour drive haha.

I went to Colorado Mountain College which is a little community college here in CO and theres 9 different campuses spread throughout mountain towns. Its pretty cool to be able to go to school in a resort town! I already have a associates degree so a college isn't the biggest deal, Just thought id take classes if one was near.

Another question, Where is SV even located in the state? I haven't gotten a map out.

But thanks a lot! I want to try to get up there this winter for a visit!

Yo, high school senior here living in Hailey, which is the neighboring town to Sun Valley. Me personally, I fucking love it here. When we get snow, which this year we have, its been super good. Lots of tree skiing, and good backcountry access. Just gonna comment on things people haven't already touched on. Twin Falls is about 45 minutes away, and I would recommend bulk buying food down there from Costco or Winco just because of the price of food in the valley. Yer gonna save a ton of money. Summer activities are mainly mountain biking, camping, two good skateparks, river shenanigans, lake shenanigans, rock climbing etc. In ketchum there is a really rad local scene and if your friendly you will surely make new friends and find opportunities to do cool shit. Living south of sun valley where I do, you may be able to find some cheaper housing, but living in ketchum is pretty sweet just because of accessibility to the mountain/bars/restauraunts. Lots of concerts in the summer, with free smaller ones and larger events with the big names. Idaho weather can be finnicky but sunny and nice temps for the most part. There are only lots of tourists here at the peak holiday times and at some points in the summer.

pretty disjointed but pm me if you have any other questions

^ dgraves knows what he's talking about. Also a local here that goes to the same high school. Ask any other questions if you need to.

I love it here the only thing close to a downside is that everything is fucking expensive but its a ski town so what can you expect. Other than that all down sides aren't even close to noticeable. In terms of park it usually is kinda week but some days its killer, this year they stepped up tho. The park is on a whole different mountain, but they are putting up a jump line and some rails and hips and shit on Seattle ridge wich is like the 3rd mountain but not really because its connected by bowls and lifts. So that will be sick ive been waiting for them to do it for a while and called it /claim. For colleges CSI or BSU is your best bet BSU is a better education and more respected (CSI is kinda a joke) So id go BSU its bout 2 hours away though. The people are kinda mixed we have a large population of old ass rick prudes and a group of fun hippy mountain towners so if you just get ver the butthurt old people and their little dogs its all good. Its a little expensive but not the worst. The town is fun it getts boring late at night in the winter sometimes but in the summer there are a shit tin of concerts and stuff. The climate is pretty nice it gets pretty cold in the winter a handful of days below 0 in the morning, and a decent amount of days 100 and up in the summer but mostly like 90. Tourists we get an ok amount over breaks but that is about equivalent to a slow aspen or pc day. Only time there is a lift line is pow days for the most part. Events we don't have a ton but a good amount of concerts in the summer and stuff. I dont know you probably got the feel since you were here today, I think I saw you outside Starbucks at like 4:30 or 5. but ill answer any of your questions or Leo he knows more about it here than me.

Im a student at BSU currently but i rode sun valley a few times, sadly only one of which was on a pow day and a few of the other ones were decent days. The upper bowls get fucking miserable with no fresh so that blows, but other than that i fuckin love the place, ketchum gives the raddest vibes and the weather is crazy good

Sun Valley is an amazing place year round, locals are very friendly and theres always something to do year round. One of the main downsides is cost of living Ketchum gets expensive but the surrounding towns Hailey and Bellevue are much cheaper. If your looking for some bitchen snow during the winter and amazing camping during the summer SV if your place

Edit: My bad I thought this thread was in NSG now there's two bumped Sun Valley threads, fuck

Bringing back this thread since I'm moving to SV full time pretty soon, anyone in the area? Looking forward to this summer and doing cool things but I'll be a doofus who knows nobody, so hit me up if you want to MTB / camp / hike / beer
