Hi everybody im gonna show you how to make a useless machine. Basically i did this because one, its summer so i cant ski and two i just wanted to. To see it in motion go to this link.. (this was my motivation)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqAUmgE3WyM

Here is a list of parts that i used

1- DPDT toggle switch

1- Momentary Switch with roller

1- 4 AA Battery holder

1- Rc Servo

1-Broken Speaker box (can be any kind of box)

and along with some basic tools and skills like (Soldering iron, Solder, Wire, Screw driver(s), Heat shrink)

Step 1 Gather all of your materials

Step 2 Remove servo horn and bottom screws, remove bottom, remove top carefully(dont loose gears) and cut the black 180 degree limiter and white on on top of the main gear.

Step 3 Cut the Wires and connector off and Solder the red and black wire to the two power leads and put everything back together

Step 4 Wiring Look at diagram

Step 5 the case, cut hole for switch, mount switch and servo (i used the end of a coat hanger for the arm fastened by superglue and screws) mount momentary switch and battery pack and trap door and done. (I did not go into detail because each box is different) I also added a rubber stopper so the arm would not slip off the switch.

Basicly what happens is when the system is in the off position the momentary switch is pressed down by the arm. When the switch is turned on the servo turns on moving releasing the momentary switch until the switch it in the off position and then because the polarity is switched in the momentary switch the servo reverses direction until the power is cut when the arm presses the momentary switch.

Thanks

Reminds me of those boxes from back in the day that when you would open them a snake would come out.

So what would happen if you made it so the piece that turns the lever off unable to reach the lever? Would it just keep going back and forth? or does it stop there?

asissle, you could have saved lots of time and effort if you had just linked to the instructable that you copied this from:

http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Most-Useless-Machine/

It looks like you are taking credit for someone else's work.

Also, you are doing a disservice to anyone trying to build a Useless Machine, because the instructable has lots more information that you do not provide: troubleshooting, sources to buy parts, alternate way to build the electronics and links to kits other than the ThinkGeek one.

Cheers,

Joe

Who am I? Someone who's built several useless machines, long before this forum post was ever written. Useless Machines built exactly as asissle did.

I didn't say he cut and paste right from the instructable. I'm sure Asissle took his own photos.

He's basically copied the "CONTENT" of the Useless Machine instructable: modding a servo, how the toggle switch is wired, everything.

If he came up with this idea on his own, he's almost 2 & 1/2 years & 800,000 views too late. If he didn't come up with this on his own, he should be posting a link to where he did get the info from.

Like I mentioned in my first post, there is much more information contained in the original instructable. By not linking to where he got his info from, he's doing a disservice to anyone interested in building a Useless Machine. He doesn't list where you can buy the parts, he doesn't give any troubleshooting info.

And he's implying that he came up with this all on his own. I'm saying he didn't and that he's leaving lots of helpful information out of his post.

Yes this is my second post at this forum. Doesn't make what I have to say any less true.

Take the time to actual read the instructable and then decide for yourself.

NO! You were supposed to say "Joe", then I'd say "JoeWho"? And it would be kickass. I'm not calling you out at all.

Like i said i got my inspiration from the video from think geek also i used a different build than the one on instructables as he uses a 555 timer and i did not. Also i did not claim i made this up or anything.

why do you care so much? so what, maybe he did follow your instructions and post his photos and version. But in the end you're machine isn't going to change anything, it's useless.

Believe me, I know just how ridiculous this thread is.

I'm not arguing where asissle got his inspiration from. And while he didn't claim to make this up, he certainly didn't say where he got the plans from and that leaves many people to assume that he came up with this on his own.

Where did you get the plans from, asissle?

Anyone following this thread may want to actually go and check out the instructable because asissle is misleading everyone with his last reply. The plans he uses are the same as the instructable.

The instructable lists TWO WAYS to build the machine.

The first way is EXACTLY HOW asissle made his machine: modding a servo and wiring the toggle and micro switch.

The 555 timer asissle mentions is at the END OF the instructable and is another way of building the machine that doesn't require modding the servo.

Make magazine has the same plans that asissle used, and they credit the instructable we are talking about.

My biggest problem with this post is that by not putting in links to where the original plans are, anyone trying to build a Useless Machine is at a disadvantage.

And giving credit, where credit is due is kind of nice too!

And if everyone hasn't figured it out by now, I'm the guy who wrote the instructable, and posted the video below(it has over 8 million views).

So if you are going to build a machine, please check out the original plans http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Most-Useless-Machine/

Cheers, and I hope everyone has gotten a good laugh from this thread.

You're a huge, huge douche bag

Everyone that builds a ski rail NEEDS TO GIVE CREDIT TO THE ORIGINAL HAND RAIL CREATOR!

not only that but he posted your video
