Summer Skiing - Europe. Advice?

Me and a couple of friends are trying to plan a ski trip for the summer in july. probably 10th onwards. We are having a lot of difficulty picking a destination and have been looking at places like saas fee, hintertux and now folgefonna.

We know that the snow has not been great in the alps this year so not sure if thats the best idea.

If any one has any info on where would be best to go, where to stay etc it would be greatly appreciated. Have tried searching a few things but nothing was too informative.

of course + karma

HIntertux!

Park is all set up allready, and the snow isn't really a problem so high up. Great park too, the jumps are probably one of the best in the summer ( at least in europe).

les deux alpes is the cheapest for sure.

usually a lot of fun.

i dont know how the snow will be though.

saas fee is supposedly pretty good, the british freeski camps are there

if you want guaranteed snow and a whole new experience come shred indoor in the uk haha

Talma. 5500cm of elevation. Just look at it in all its majesty.

You don't even need snow, just enjoy it's pure form.

Pretty much all of the summer skiing on the glaciers in the alps should be decent in july. I've only ever been to Tignes, Les 2 Alpes and Zermatt. Les 2 Alpes has the best summer park but it can be really busy. search for videos of Les 2 Alpes Kumi Yama (an event held there every summer) for an idea what the glacier park looks like.
Then there are loads of other glaciers in CH, Austria and Italy. Maybe best to PM michael_bc he knows a lot about these

thanks to those that have helped so far. looks like 2 alpes ski day goes until 12.30 is this the case with hintertux and folgefonna? folgefonnas site is all in Norwegian and past the camp dates i cant work out how long their summer season lasts.

On hintertux, the lifts ussually work till 4 pm every day. As for the places to stay, theres ussually allways enough apartments/hotels free during summer, just google it, theres plenty .

I'd say Les 2 Alpes.

The park is insane, especially in July, with a lot of differents rails, boxes, jumps and also a 22foot superpipe.

You can ski from 9 to 13:30 and there are so many off-hill activities to do and a great night life.

Also pretty easy to get there if you dont rent a car since there is a shuttle bus from Grenoble to Les 2 Alpes.

Hope it will help you a bit !

only been to saas fee for summer skiing, and it was a really sick park imho, jumpline was very good, halfpipe was also quite ok considering the weather conditions, rails were all kinda monotonous, they could've added a bit more and also varied a bit, especially against noon/afternoon the jumps become too slushy and having a sick rail line would've been sick ....
oh and i also fell in a crevasse at the end of the park, still within the groomed area, it was sick :)

this kid knows what he s talking about.

i ve done a lot of glaciers in europe, and even though les 2 alpes is busy it s the best. best park and also you can ski there for free, legally.

so you should just go there dude.

if you want to pay 40euros a day for saas fee or zermatt your call.

les 2 alpes = better rail line, decent jump line (sooo busy so it s not really fun to jump) and free.

and also, tons of activities : tramps, swimmin pool, golf, mountain biking, little skatepark, summer luge...

Just been back from Les Trois Valees (close to Les 2 Alpes), glacier season has already started cause all slopes lower than 2500m are almost unskiable. If you can, be spontaneous. If not, either go for Saas Fee or Les 2 Alpes. Hintertux is certainly cheaper and the park is one of the best in the whole alps, but a base at the Swiss/French border might be a safer option (= you can change location if necessary). Hintertux is far away from other major summer park resorts.

I'm in Saas-Fee at the moment and they are not happy about the snow levels they have, with regards to having good conditions in the summer. It's been a very dry year and melting has started all the way to the top. With the glacier you can guarantee there will be snow, but they are concerned about the conditions of snow bridges, and having enough snow to plug crevasses etc.

You might wanna consider Val Senales/Schnalstal, just over the border in Italy. It's not that well know, amazing park (no pipe though) and last time I was there in summer, there where no lines at the lift. We've had a lot of parkshoots there with the magazine I work for and the people are super friendly. I just contact the parkshaper for you to see what he had to say about the conditions:

hei, val senales is tha banger like always, good snow, massive

park, some new insane obstacles! this year end of july will be not so good

because of the less snow but definitely ok til the end of june! maybe also later

but depends of the weather conditions in may! if you have time try to

come the week before the end of april! we builded a cuple of good stuffs

to shoot!http://www.facebook.com/pages/F-TECH-SNOWPARKS/93132557970

I've been to Les 2 Alpes for about four summers in a row and it's definitely fun but (as said by other already) really crowded, especially after the summer holiday's have officially started.

Hintertux is good, downside here is that Hintertux village is not as much fun as Les 2 Alpes, since it mainly consist of 4 star hotels. Most people that go to Hintertux stay in Mayrhofen, which is a little down the valley.

Last time I was in Saas it was fun but didn't offer that much variation of jumps and rails and I sometimes found the different between a small/medium/large object had to big off a different to progress in a nice way. I have to say here that I don't know how that's gonna be this year, cause it changes every year.

You mentioned that you wanna go in July, but if you have the possibility I would try to go in June. A lot less people on all the glaciers, parks are already finished, lower prizes for accommodation, etc.

If you need any more info or have questions on what the best way is to get accommodation, etc, send me a message.

Folgefonna is usually great in the summer! The park is always good and the vibe is great! Mid July I think its alright, but late July the season i coming to an end I think. I would also concidered Juvass for summer park skiing in Norway, they have had pretty decent park last couple off years.

anybody know how to get to val senales without car? so far im leaning towards les deux alpes since the park there is so awesome, but if its so crowded and skiing only till 13:30 it kinda sucks...

go to saas the british freeski camp is so much fun I did it last year and I'm doin it this year aswell

I'll send a message to the guy from Val Senales and ask about the best travel options. I'll let you know when I get an answer.

2Alpes is the best. Warning cause not all the glaciers are open all the summer season, like Senales usually close in mid July

So was just looking at some webcams of a few European resorts today, and it's starting to look pretty green. I was wondering how much a poor snow year will affect the summer skiing? Obviously summer parks are set up on glaciers so there will be snow, but will having such a shitty snow year mean less features in the summer park? Or s smaller area to ski? More closed days/closing early? Or will it be business as usual at places such as Deux Alpes, Tux, Saas Fee etc.?

Hey, another one to consider would be tignes glacier, near val d'isere. We drove with a car of 4 from the Uk, stayed in a cheap apartment, skiied 6 days and spent less than £500 each. We stopped at a supermarked in bourg st maurice, and got all our beer and food for the week there as the town is quite expensive. There is so much to do in the village as your pass gets you a "sport tignes" card, which includes all the trampolines, the pool, all the lake side water sports and the quite MASSIVE water ramp!

The park is small but pretty decent. 2 jump lines, the biggest o which is really nice and a good progression in terms o size. Rails are pretty stock and there's not that many. No queue on the tow so loads o laps. Only problem is sometimes park didnt open till like 9.30 and closed at 1.

This year I wanna go to the british ski camp in saas but need to find some friends to go with!!

Hope that helps :)

Folgefonna or Juvass is supergood! I prefer Juvass, because there is more space, and less crowded. Both places has a good park, but Juvass is Sick!

hey, there was a big jump line with a 20' kicker then maybe a 40/60' kicker.

Small jump line with 4 small jumps.

box/rail line with a nice rainbow rail, really high box and a decent whale tail then a couple o shitty beginner boxes. As I say, not the best park but one o the best programs in town, and last year loads o trails still open as well.

Jaggy_Snake and I discussed this, and decided that Les2Alpes is probably the best in terms of cost, snow and features.

The rail garden and booter lines look fucking stacked. If other people were going out there, an NS appartment share could keep down costs, and if any UK NSers wanted to go, then my car can fit another 2 people comfortably, and would make driving viable.

i think les 2 alpes is more fun if you re an advanced skier, but if you re beginning(ie not hitting big jumps that much) tignes is definitly a good option !

ive got 1 week holidays from my employer in july, i.e. the first week. i cant go before because of uni and work. so if wed all go first week in july that would be awesome, or you go two weeks during last week of june and i join for the second week, the first week in july

Yeah, I was thinking these times, depending how long Max can get off work. My only commitment over the summer is my girlfriend's 21st birthday party, in the middle of July, so I'm very flexible.

Well as soon as we decide on confirmed dates, I can change my 2 week holiday from where it's booked now (middle of June) to end of June/beginning of July. Easy.
