Studying for a year in Montreal - Few questions

Hey all;

So I've applied for a year abroad and 'grades pending' I'll be heading out from the UK at the end of August to study at Concordia. My main concern currently is accommodation, I'm looking at pretty much all options at the moment but I'd like something rather close to the University as I seem to have a habit of rolling out of bed 20mins before for class, especially after a night out of boozing. Does anyone know any reliable letting agents/websites? Anyone have any rooms avaliable?

Also on a side note I've heard alcohol is expensive in Canada, is this true, or do you just need to know where and when to go?

Thanks! - I'll probably hassle you guys with more questions closer to the time, ha.

For accommodation look i'd say you should look for something near a metro station. You'll make it to your class in 20-30 min easy.

Booze in Quebec's average compared to rest of north america.

Exemple for average beer it's usualy around 24$/24b (1$/beer), it's like 30something$ in ontario and 48$(1,5-2$/beer) in west but in the us it's like 15$/30 (.50$/beer).

If you go out that's when it start to cost a lot, in bars/clubs it's hard to find beer under 5$ (usualy 5-8$ for beer 8-10$ for drinks). So it can easily cost a lot. Solution Is predrink. Start drinking at budds house as much as you can some 1$ beer from store then go out and only buy 2-3 5$ exact same beer they sell in bars.

Have massive fun in MTL man !!

You must be the Radio Lounge type dude , club la boom ? la mouche ? Ivy ? 5-8 $ a beer is ridiculously steep.

In restaurant, bar or clubs, average for a beer is around-over 5$ for sure.

Unless they sell pitchers of course.

I'd fully recommend just going through craigslist Montreal to find an apartment. There is a ton of student housing around Concordia, but the closer you are to the university (and to McGill University) the more expensive the rent is.

The best place to live as a student, in my opinion, is in the Plateau - an area roughly bounded by st urbain, st joseph, rue berri and sherbrooke. The rent is real cheap and it's a sick area - the best bars, restauraents and shops in Montreal by far. To get to Concordia it would be about a 30 minute walk, 10 minute bike ride or 20-30mins on the Metro (less on the bus). Definitely the best place to live in Montreal.

and yes, i dont know what the guy above is saying. Alcohol is very expensive here. In bars/out it's pretty average, but it's not like the UK where you can get booze in the supermarket really really cheap - there are government legal minimum prices for alcohol and about 24 for 24 beers is legally the cheapest you can buy. you can buy beer/wine in s corner shop/supermarket but hard liquor has to be bought in the government shop called SAQ. my advice: go to duty free on your way over, it's what I always do!

Also, take a look at the classifieds for Concordia (probably available online). McGill has it's own classifieds too, take a look there, you wil find a ton of stuff. McGill is real close to Concordia.
