Structuring an Edit

So I'm in the process of making my first longer length cut and I'm overthinking how to structure it. Like do you like when each skiier has their own dedicated part, or do you like it just random? My current idea is kinda dividing it up into different seshes we had throughout the season but I'm looking at what I got so far and it seems kinda boring idk

I think the dividing it up by skier cut is cool. It also depends on the music and vibe. Everyone out here tryina do zootspace ya know so don’t be afraid to just freestyle it and let it build how if feels right to build

I definitely prefer the chronological/sesh vibe to kind of just like tell the story of the season if ya know what I mean.

unless you have like 2+ minutes of BANGERS from each skier then I’d say go more the segment style….

But otherwise both from the editing perspective and the viewing perspective I really like the sesh-by-sesh story of the season.

Level 1s real-time is a great example of this they kind of broke the mold of the athlete segment format and told the story of their season

Just start cutting shit together, it'll start to flow. I'd recommend using your own creativity and trying out your own style, using others for inspo is great but I'd hesitate to try an emulate anyone else's style. The beauty of editing is there is no correct way, so just do you man.

i start with the music and work my way out from that.

the clips should cut with the music and reflect the feeling of the music imo.

i do literally the exact opposite

So you cut an edit and just toss a song on without changing anything?

You don't have to do anything anyway editing, but editing around your music is usually a better method IMO.

well i have to usually cut and edit a 30 minute block of footage instead of individual clips like a digital camera. i’ll just cut a base draft then play songs over it until i find something suitable and then edit accordingly.

do you use premiere? you can drop that shit in your timeline and select "Scene Edit Detection" and it'll cut up that video into clips for ya

i just started using premiere a few months ago so i have minimal understanding of any special shit

how would that know which ski clip i want to keep and delete???

It doesn't, it just cuts your 30 min video into the clips you recorded, it can detect when the scene changes and it works really well, try it out brother it might save you some time.

I put the song on first. Theres some parts of the song where I know I want a certain trick to be there so I add that first. THEN I work around that and add the remainder of the clips so that I have certain important clips at specific parts of the song and the rest of the clips are worked around that.

Dont force the vid to be a certain length either. Im not saying don’t add any mid clips, but so many times I watch a vid and think “if this dude cut out half of these clips so it was mostly just bangers this edit would he 100x better”

You could do a mixture of all the things you mentioned. Somewhat Chronologically assort the edit. I think it’s a big help to edit to the music tho… don’t put in a song right away but chop your clips up and pick which ones you want, then put a song in and go from there. You could start out with b roll, then throw in the skiing, and in between “segments” you could throw in a little b roll. Save the heaviest tricks for the end/ best parts of the song. Leaves the viewer wanting more. If I see a banger ass ender and a classic fade to black right after it with the hardest part of the song I’m more inclined to think goddamn that was a fire edit.

There's pros and cons of giving each rider their own segment, so there's not really a right way to do it, just personal preference.

I prefer to start cutting up clips and then seeing what songs work. When I find a song that works then I start making more adjustments so that the clips line up better with the song.

It all depends on the footage and the vibe and mainly what the storyline is

I like having an opening segment with clips from everyone then moving into rider segments, with the best rider that the end, second best at the start

How long of an edit? How is the quality? Are you ok with a segment, or a narrative?

Rewatch all the footage and get a feel for it. It take a lot of time to look at everything and narrow down what you wanna show.

Start cutting it up and just let whatever you want to do just happen. Don't think about what other people want to see. Make what you like.

My process, bad or good, is to dump all of the clips into premiere, trim them down a bit, and then start listening to music.

Once I find a song that I really feel as I'm watching those clips, I drop the song into premiere and start working around it. Matching the pacing of the song to the B-roll or to the big hits.

Eventually I get drunk and/or lazy and call it a day and upload it. Probably not a great process but it works for me as someone who films and edits for fun and has a day Job

The first question you should ask is if you are good enough at skiing to post an edit. Probably not so my advice is to trash it

dont make it boring, dont be afraid to throw out a lot of footage, have people on here critique it if you can.

How do you pick a song? I have restarted my edit three times now as I'm halfway thru and get tired of the song and trash it to use a new song. I'm sick of watching my clips at this point

IMO i pick music for my edit. not an edit for my music

Bruh Boil it down. If it is boring. Boil it TF Down. If you think you have 3 minutes of footage, Slam the shit into a minute only. Make the shit high powered AF. Go and find a dank song that has just an absolute banger 1 minute verse that's catchy and hype. Slam all the footy into that minute. Cut all the bullshit run-ins and B-footy no one really cares about. Cut out any trick that isn't an absolute vibe or banger. It's the only way man to not make a boring edit. And nowadays people don't got long attention spans. This is the Era of Reels, Tiktoks, and Shorts. So play to it.

What the fuck did I just read
