Anyone use Strava for skiing at resorts? I'm gonna start making segments at my home mtn to see who can b line top to bottom the fastest without getting their pass pulled or dying.

Strava is everything that is wrong with many sports these days. Fun freeride Mountain Biking is being destroyed by weekend warriors trying to get their KOMs and QOMs. I try to go have fun riding with my friends and all they want to do is go as fast up and down as possible, then after like two laps, they are too tired to continue biking. Strava just makes everything competitive and ruins the easygoingness of the sports we know and love. Sorry about the rant :/

OP: I don't really think this could happen to skiing so go for it

Yeah I see that. I use strava to track how much I'm biking for exercise purposes but I don't really pay attention to leader boards. Just thought it would be funny to book ass down groomers with friends to see who can get the best time. Maybe see if lying down on my tails can beat the tried and true tuck.

So like a virtual chinese downhill?

Yes exactly.

I see your points, but I disagree, personally. I'm using it only to see how many miles I ride, and just kinda compare and contrast each time I am out. I have a buddy that uses it for tracking his runs in Nicaragua (him and his wife live there), and it's super cool to see the totally different mapping over there on my feed.

I have a small handful of buddies on Strava, so it's nothing too crazy.

Yeah, its definitely not all Strava users that are the issue, but just the people that think of it as a race with winners and losers. I actually wouldn't mind at all if it was just for tracking distance and speed, but as soon as people start to use it as social media it bothers me (but I'm also just weird because the only social media I actually like is NS).

strava is clutch asf for running and endurance sports. Great stats and activity tracking, especially when linked with external applications like Garmin. Wouldn't ski or mtn bike wit it tho lol

It's a fitness tracking app which people use for a multitude of reasons... Sounds like you're one of the ones that takes it too seriously.

Y'all are going down. I say we just have virtual chinese downhills all year at our mountains, I'll run one from T2B at the bird for sure

I'd be down but my hill is only 350 vert, might be pretty lame.

So apparently stravas segment detection is ass when on a wide ski trail. Idk if that means you need to hit a defined start and endpoint, or you can’t deviate much from the defined segment throughout the run.

Lamest thing about strava is when people record private/illegal spots and then the route shows up on the map publicly and the spot gets fucked

Lol I don't even use it. I'm all for the fitness aspect of it, but the social media part is what ruins it for me.

100% agree in skiing especially east coast bc i have put in work to cut glades etc, but gotta say i have found a ton of sick mtb trails using the global heat map. Along with caltopo for finding gravel routes

roast me

But i dont think your normal weekend beater would put in the time/ effort to find trails that way. Still takes a lot of poking around and ending up on game trails, hike a bike, and other fun stuff your average rider would not be down with

That being said if I’m riding rogue/ off map stuff i usually set it to private, i think that excludes it from posting to the heat map?

you're just upset you cant get any crowns.... i kid.. but in all seriousness.. just use UA's terrible mapmyride then or ridewithgps.

i use it for skiing as well since my garmin has a ski mode and records descents while auto pausing ascents. Fun to track vert for the day and runs and to see how off the beaten path you get. there are even segments there and KOMs to get as well. A little tough with skiing and i do find it extremely dangerous. Im surprised they allow that given downhill segments on road cycling are hidden from devices because it makes people do more dangerous things..
