So I live in Boulder currently and my bike got stolen a couple weeks ago. I was pissed but resigned to the fact that I probably would never see it again. It was registered, so if anybody tried to sell it to a pawn shop or something, they would be picked up, but according to the officer I logged the incident report with (so I could hopefully collect insurance on it, which I was unable to) this was unlikely and he pegged my chance of recovery at 1 in 20.
However, the story changed when I found the fucking bike in a Santa Barbra craigslist posting. I was initially suspicious when I found the exact same bike on sale mere days later so I emailed the dude asking for higher resolution pictures. Sure enough, the bike had the exact same scuff marks from my messed up lock and a two cuts in the handlebar tape in the exact same places.
I sent this information to the officer who had logged by incident report who then gave the case to a detective to deal with. Now, apparently the detective is either mildly retarded or just lazy because the extent of his crack police work was to email the guy asking for the serial number, which, surprise surprise, the guy did not respond to. So, the detective told me there isn't anything that he can do.
My question, any ideas? I'm not gonna go to fucking Santa Barbra for a bike that was only like $600 to begin with, but I want to fuck this guy over and/or get the bike back.

Tell him you're interested in buying the bike from him, ask him to meet up to check it out and you have cash on hand, bring friends.
 
You missed the part about how it's in Santa Barbra. Though believe me, when I first found the thing I nearly jumped in my car with a baseball bat and drove there, despite the obvious costs/idiocy of such a plan.
 
Already tried, the cops don't seem to give a shit about stolen bikes. I do realize that this is less important than rape/murder, but even so, I bet this dude has stolen more than one bike considering he cut through a fucking u lock while I was inside for an hour.
 
Do you have any pictures of the bike prior to it being stolen? If you do then you could show the police that picture showing it's the same bike. Also any buying history documents for the bike on your behalf would be useful as evidence.

This is the worst part. because when someone cuts though a good lock to get at your bike, you know that is some skumbag that does it pretty often.

if you know someone in santa barbara ask them to help you out and to steal the bike back from him or something.
or find someone online who would be willing to do this. i bet there is someone out there who is into biking that would be down to fuck with this asshole.

yo i go to cu boulder and errbody gets their bike stolen however i live sabout 30 minutes north of santa barbara right now for summer idk if you want me to help in some way you can think of maybe i can fuck this guy up or send me the listing for it idk but im willing to help in anyway you need it
 
i could set up a meeting to buy the bike have the cops in on it ready to pull up on this guy as he sells me the bike they could come up pinch him and check serial numbers repo the bike and some how get it back to you in beautiful boulder

man your cops must be pretty fucking different to ours, we got rolled for a slab and in the end they caught the guys and we got the cash back from the dude's that rolled us.

Lets get this thread back on track. I am pretty sure you are allowed to basically go and take the bike back from him if you can prove that you are the rightful owner of the bike. For example you go to this guys house to check out the bike say you wanna take it for a test ride to see how it is than book shit to somewhere else. he wont call the cops because he stole the bike in the first place and if he does you have all the paper work to prove that its yours. worth a shot.
 
BACK TO THE MAIN POINT!!! skwirl ima help you out inbox me with the craigslist posting and the serial number on your bike ill talk to the sbpd and see if someone in there will be willing to help send a squad car or something set up a meeting to buy the bike they'll check the serial numbers if they match they'll get the guy for theft you'll get your bike back. if they won't send police to help I'll do my best to get your bike back. Finally To skiierman- im trying to help a stranger out and you have to go and be a cocksucker and question my ability to help this kid. If i didn't think i could help the guy i wouldn't say i could. I know that this type of stuff happens a lot in Salt Lake City/Denver/Boulder. Tons of people steal bikes in those cities and transport them to California in copious amounts to sell them. Pretty shitty and it's a way for people to get a lot for nothing. Cops are definitely on the lazy/ignorant side when it comes to bike theft. I don't think a lot of them realize how expensive and how big of an inconvenience it is for us common people to have our bikes stolen.
If you have the serial number and a picture of you with the bike I would try to do something. It could very well be that the guy is a runner of a lot of bikes. Would be pretty cool to catch him and take down whoever he is with. Good luck.

There's something you haven't considered. What if someone stole it, took it to Santa Barbara then sold it to this guy? He might not know he has a stolen bike at all. He may have even paid for it, decided he no longer wants it and wants to offload it. Not likely, but just saying its a possibility.
