Stevens Mountain Bike Park

The Sierra Club and Tulalip tribes both filed appeals against the bike park on May 27th. The Tulalip tribe has not yet released its conflict. But the Sierra Club is saying that the proposed plan does "not address effects to wildlife reliant on the area, such as wolverine”. The Sierra Club unfortunately has the money and resources to bring the case to supreme court which could shut down the entire project down. The bike park is now for sure not going to happen this summer which is nice to hear.

The USFS has already approved the plan which is all you really need. The Tulalip Tribe and Sierra Club are just putting their noses in places they don't need to be and are making a huge deal out of nothing. Seriously this is bullshit, please write an email to The Sierra Club, http://www.sierraclub.org/, and boycott the Tulalip Casino.

I know plenty of SC members who are in support of the bike park. I will get them to write in.

and ya the Indians need to go fuck themselves in their casino.

the indians musta been drunk when somebody pulled this over their heads

yea i said it
please delete if necessary

there's plenty of nature in the cascades, there are no bike parks...
how many tulalip indians go biking anyways?
is this there way at slowly pissing off the middle class of America?

They give so much shit about their land and preserving its natural beauty that they built a massive casino and hotel on it

Their just pissed because less people will drive by their shitty casino if stevens opens

I am having a really hard time understanding how the Tulalip Indian tribe has any say over anything that goes on 80 miles from their reservation? Not to mention the sheer hypocrisy of their stance.

Has anyone actually seen Tulalip? Not just driving near wal-mart and boom city, Im talking about wayyyy back around the bay. Shit is DISGUSTING and I have never seen a more genuine lack of interest in the environment or community.

What a joke.

i dont really understand why sierra club is against this one. i understand why they were kind of pissed at the white pass expansion even though it was a 20+ year old agreement. but this makes absolutely NO sense. mtb is super low impact as long as its done right, and the people who are designing this park are the same ones who designed whistler. they know how to do it. plus this will have LESS impact than skiing in the winter. a few 3ft wide trails and woodwork vs. 50-100ft wide ski trails.

the tulalip tribe has absolutely NO reason to oppose this AT ALL.

WTF guys. seriously?

b/c that's what these faggots do all day long. If you're not hiking they don't want you to be able to do it. They feel that they have the right to enjoy nature, but if you want to enjoy it in a different way other then on foot they'll do anything they can to stop it. That being said it would be great if anyone who wrote a letter to the FS already to send one to the FS here in Oregon for Timberlines push to get a bike park.

They have a straight up vendetta against things with wheels, so many dirt bike trails have been converted to pedestrian trails for more bull shit reasons

If i'm not mistaken these ass holes are also the ones that tried to close 27 and theres conspiracy that they sabotaged the pond skim this year

i really dont have anything against sierra club, and i dont think you guys should hate on them either. they have done some good things for wilderness. but i think theyve gone a little too far a few times in recent years. i just think they could be using their resources to fight more important fights like against oil drilling in Utah or ANWR...

The Sierra Club and similar groups are responsible for protecting and creating a great deal of wilderness all over the US. Blanket blaming or accusations are neither necessary nor reasonable, especially from people who enjoy the outdoors as much as skiers.

However, this is pretty strange. The land has already been cut into runs, has chairs on it, and is divided by US 2 the whole way (far more dangerous and destructive to wildlife than a bike park might be). I think that, within reason, people should be allowed to practice their passions--a bike park at Stevens that already has the lifts and land designated to use seems the best place to put a bike park. Not to mention that they've already begun preparations and aren't going to half-ass it.

Who knows where the tribe fits into this.

Some of my friends have been involved with the Wolverine tracking studies that were going on in Glacier National Park before the whole project was shitcanned by beaurocratic idiocy. I've seen two wolverines this summer hiking Glacier. Based on my friends' stories and my own observation, they move very very fast and wouldn't den in a ski area anyway. Stevens is a tiny piece of the North Cascades, and I'm reasonably sure that any wolverine wouldn't spend much time in such a densely frequented area.

Saving wilderness is important, but when land already has chairlifts on it, it makes sense to use it for a bike park too.

Looks like they finally found one at Stevens

If anything they should be more concerned about godzilla

I chortled.

So are they building a pedestrian overpass? I was hoping we could get a couple scare the weekenders away deaths before that happened.

Heres what the Stevens Pass Bike Park guys had to say this morning

After 5 years of planning, environmental review, and federal permitting process, we are excited to announce that the Stevens Pass Bike Park has gained final approval to begin construction.Given the time of the year and proximity of the coming winter, we will use the coming months to plan final construction details.
