Staying in Squamish?

I'm thinking about making my first pilgrimage to Whistler towards the end of April and I'm debating on where I should stay. I know staying in Whistler can be quite expensive. Is it a good idea to stay in Squamish since it is cheaper or should I be staying in Whistler the first time I ski there?

Do you have a car? Totally depends what you want as well, not as much of a party scene in Squamish, and rent isn't super cheaper there either. Pemberton is a bit closer to Whistler but is further from Vancouver.
