Stay in Denver for school Or go to summit county for a year?

Need a little advice on what I should do next year. I don't know if I should stay in Denver and just go to school there, or just go to Colorado mountain college in summit county for a year(since it's just pre requisite classes anyways) and ski a lot more and save some money while I'm at it

Unless you intend on being a pro skier, you will be happy in 5 years or so that stayed in Denver; you will be able to ski plenty and also have more options to make a satisfying living.

Honestly it doesn't sound like a bad idea. Explore while ya can, ski while ya can ect ect. As long as you're able to do schoolwork in a super distracting environment then you'll be fine academic wise.

Rent will be more expensive but if you're looking to rent a room then now's the time to do it. Check out 'Summit County Housing Connection' and 'Breck Buy and Sell' facebook groups. Good thing is that jobs are stupidly easy to find due to the housing shortage.

You need to have confirmation from both CMC and where ever it is that you want to transfer (more important) that your credits will indeed transfer. Get it in writing from both schools if possible.

I have heard a lot of stories about people getting fucked by going to CMC for a year or two and then finding out that the majority of their credits will not transfer out because CMC is not an accredited institution with most major universities.

I would recommend staying in Denver for school. Denver is a rad city so it's not like you're going to be missing out on any fun. Focus on school and do the college thing during the week, and then head up to summit on the weekends for skiing. In the long run, you will not regret that.

I get it, Summit County is pretty sweet... I have been up there a bunch of times. But don't get stuck there man. That town sucks people in and they burn out pretty quickly. Keep your priorities in check outside of skiing

Yeah I've heard from from a few people that CMC will say they transfer and then when it comes time to transfer them, only half the credits transfer. Definitely would need to check with both schools about the transferable credits before I make any decisions.

Yeah that's true, I can just always stick with the weekend warrior gig. I've heard that a bunch of people will try to just go up there for a year or two and never leave. I definitely don't want that. And in the end it would be nice to still be by my close friends and family in the Denver-boulder area

Yeah, I mean CMC wants your money and it sounds like they will tell you what you want to hear to get it. If you go that route, I highly recommend that you do your due dillagince in reviewing their course offering and then getting a written confirmation from wherever you want to transfer that they will accept the credits from said course offering.

Yup, that's a fact. There are some seriously fried people that are stuck there

What are your life goals and career interests outside of skiing? Where do you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years... how about 15 years from now? Skiing is the illest, but keep your life and the bigger picture in perspective.

Denver is a rad city with some incredible opportunities.

Everyone I know who's come from college to ski for a season with plans on going back to college has stuck with their plans and didn't end up getting stuck in the valley. One of my roommates just left to go back to college and couldn't of been happier he came for the season. The people who get "stuck" as you're describing tend to be more on the unsuccessful side of life. If you decide to take a season off to ski, just make sure you have everything set up for when the season ends to get back to your current life prior to moving here.

Depends. I live in Denver but also own an acre of property in Park County about 15 minutes outside of Breck. I personally would reccomend going to stay in Summit County because it would be a whole lot cheaper.

Enjoying skiing =/= needing to be a pro skier

I highly doubt that rent up in summit county is more expensive than in a booming city like Denver

Considering that I live in Summit County yeah I can tell you firsthand that the rent is more expensive.

Rent up here is ridiculous. I'm over in Avon and unless you're in employee housing you're going to be paying at least $1000+ utilities in most places. There's the occasional ~$800/mo deal but you might not get a parking space and you're probably sharing bathrooms with 17 people.

Thank you!! Don't forget the $1500 security deposit it takes to move into most places as well!

There was even a guy who signed a lease to rent out a couch in Dillon.... like what.

I'm convinced that you could put a crawl space under your stairs on OMJ for $450/month and someone would be thrilled to rent it.

So yeah, OP, if you want to live like harry potter under someones stairs, move to summit county.

Yeup, it's quite expensive here in the valley.

This. It is almost impossible to find housing anywhere in Summit county. I wanted to move there last year for my kid since he skis at a high level, and the cheapest place for the 2 of us, like a studio was 1800 a month plus all utilities. Good luck. We stayed in Park City which is also insanely expensive, just not as bad and options.

Cheaper places can definitely be found, you'd just have to check during the middle of the summer when they become available.

Youre are only young once. I lived in Breck for 6 years and then moved down to Denver and am finishing school. Take pre reqs at CMC, they'll be much cheaper than taking them at say CU or DU. And CMC credits transfer anywhere in the state of Colorado. Im 30 and know so many friends and people older than me who say they regret not moving to a mountain town for at least a year. School will always be there, your youth and health will not.

On another note, I paid almost 300 dollars cheaper in Summit than in Denver and only had one roommate, when you factor utilities. Plus, parking at my place in Summit was free. Granted its been 2 years but still. Even when I moved to Denver, I couldnt find anything near as cheap without having 5 roommates. You can find them if you look and know the right people. I got my place from a guy I had done some electrical work for.

Shit's rough. My wife and I were living in Dillon for 975 for a 1 bedroom and got booted so our landlady could up rent to 1400. We are living in Portland now and it sucks. Thinking about going to Reno to be close to skiing again, but cheaper living.

Try telling them you also have a 16 year old kid. Impossible.

Give some smaller mountains a chance. Rent is cheaper where there's less tourists and seasonal workers. Places like Summit Valley and Vail Valley will never be cheap and will continue to just get more expensive as their customer and employee base increases.

Ha, I grew up skiing Perfect North in Indiana. It's was not an option at this point with a kid that has insane potential.

There are some dope places though that are off the radar. Also options like leadville of you're a road warrior looking for the cheap rent. Shit rough though. Hope you found a decentplace somewhere.

We live in PC and it's still hard to get there by 1030. Leadville is not an option. But thank you so much for your help and advice!
