Starting a college ski club

My school (middle of no where South Dakota) does not currently have a ski club.

I was wondering if any ns'ers have experience starting one up?

What kind of activities could we do as a club? A trip to CO or some other place would probably not be feasible in the first year but maybe after were established? Would it just be a waste of my time?

We do have access to a hill that is about an hour away from campus that has a legit enough park.

I thought about it but alot of work.

I was at IU and its their biggest club on campus (not there anymore).

They had a yearly rail jam sponsered by local resort and then if you are serious about it look into EchoTours.com

They do college trips. So legit too, my trip last year: 4 lift tickets, full cabin w/ 2 roommates, bus ride from IU to Jhole, a TON of alcohol and a bunch of other shit was $600!! Plus presidents will get to go for free cause if you get enough people to sign up you get some many free.

But to start a club its pretty simple but to actually make it popular is the tough part. LOTS AND LOTS OF TIME.

Honestly I think the easiest part for you will be setting it up, considering where you are from. The hardest part will be finding enough members in order for your college to take your club seriously

I started one at my school this year. I'm a freshman and they didn't have one, and I wasn't about to not ski this winter. It's already one of the biggest on campus, and we don't have snow yet. We are also going to have an on campus rail jam.

Go for it! It is a fair bit of work, but it's worth it to have a ski club.

Being a pretty small school we only need 6 kids to sign up for it to be a club and I have at least 6 people that would be down but youre right about the school probably not taking it seriously.

The westside of South Dakota actually has a legit little mountain, and being so close to CO it's easy to make trips down there a lot. I used to get the Key,Breck, A bay pass.

Here is a pic of my home mountain in SD

tried it in NC, shit was impossible. weirdest fucking kids joined, events were awkward, ended up quitting it and letting the club dissolve because i simply didnt wanna ski with the kids that joined

good luck

Bumping cause I'm thinking of starting a ski/snowboard club at my school as well. We're in the middle of Indiana though so I'm not sure how well it would work out.

damn dude

I was at a different college last year that had a ski club and my good friends were the leaders of it, yeah a lot of weird kids were in the club, but it's not like we ever skied with them, they did their own thing on the mountain while we hit the park and stuff.

Does your school have vans/busses that club teams or other organizations use? If so, you could try to rent some for people to take to the mountain on the weekends.

Host movie premieres in lecture halls.

Make t-shirts to spread the stoke.

Once you have enough people, getting sponsors will be simple. I'm sure your local shop will give discounts for you too.

Host a rail jam! Easiest way to get people stoked on skiing. Hit up your local mountain and see if they'll donate a rail or two and maybe even some snow. If not, your ice rink can probably supply enough snow. Get sponsors and local shops to come to it.

Be a college rep with a few other people for your mountain. Idk if they do this, but most mountains around here have sweet deals for college season pass reps. I think the most important thing will be to advertise. Make sure everyone on campus is aware of the club and how awesome it'll be. Because if a lot of people are in it, I'm sure it'll be awesome no matter what.

Not sure what the ski community is like at your school but this stuff is super popular at UVM, but that isn't too surprising. Over half the students here are in the ski and snowboard club.

Hope this helps!

It's a good idea. If your school is small, I'd suggest just making a Ski and Snowboard club, rather than a ski club. It's better to have a big club that gives you the funds to throw great parties and go on awesome trips, than just making it exclusive to skiers.

My school is big enough to have both fortunately. A lot of snowboarders are in the ski club, and a few skiers are in the snowboard club, but its mostly by which type of personalities you like to hang with.

I'm sure there are plenty of kids who ski or board at your school (probably mostly gapers, but at least they shred) so just throw up flyers everywhere for a meeting and see who shows up. It might be kind of hard right now since school is fully in session, so kids aren't looking to join clubs, but you might get lucky since the season is coming up. Hope it goes well!

Lol I wasn't even considering splitting the two up... haha I guess that shows how small my school is compared to some of the larger state schools out there.

Ski and Snowboard club I should say**

Paoli or PNS. I was at IU last year and USI now. Paoli is home for me, we have a house like 10 min away so I'm there every and all weekend long. I make the trip to PNS a lot too though because it really is a lot nicer. Rose Hulman huh you must be pretty smart, bet you're an engineering major?
