Sr. Project (skiing comp) denied :( [please help]

movie would be sick, but thats not my thing. thats NIG's thing.
the point of this is to show off my event coordination skills.

basketball has a MAD sprained ankle/torn ligament rate. skiing you where big stiff boots that won't let your ankle go anywhere. (unless your T Hall at Chad's.)

You might wanna consider a couple options.

Do the movie premier just to get the project out of the way. Someone else brought up a very solid point - you need to graduate and that is priority #1. It's not that difficult to do the premier and I'm sure the resorts would love to help you out w/ either some lift tix or something like that. Doing a movie premier is no small task and you'll show you can put an event together.

The other option, if you are dead set on it, is to press on with the rail jam or comp. People hear rails and boxes and get very scared. I also think having the school's insurance cover your event is a bad idea. Use a resort - their insurance policies are designed for this sort of thing. This will take a lot of politics, but I'm sure you can find a way. Wait for snow and then talk to a resort about maybe doing a group discount and blocking off a feature for a couple hours while your groups holds a comp. The less interference the better.

You also might wanna consider doing both - premier for credit and the comp just in case. You could prolly bank on landing some kind of industry internship if you're successful.

PM me if you have any other questions

I heard on the radio the other day (they had it as a question to win a prize or something)...the sport that causes the most injuries to people ages 15-24 is basketball...everyone was guessing skiing and snowboarding though...dont know how to prove that fact but they got it from somehwere!

i actually tried doing this for a senior project arleady man, not to trample the idea, but it didn't fly. basically unless you're willing to fork ATLEAST 1,500 for insurance ( that i think was the MINIMUM) .... I tried it at my mountain and they were into the idea, i was going to do it and all the the profits go towards a charity , i had it all planned out basically but insurance fucked all my shit up . usually when mountains put on competitions they do them through companies where the companies have much much more money than you and lawyers to figure out how they want to do or split the insurance policy. One option i think they mentioned about tryed to get companies to help you was getting a ryder for a day, i may be wrong though. its worth a try though man, definantly try to the charity idea though.

another idea would be to make you skiing movie super legit, maybe show a screening at your school if it was good enough, charge a few bucks for admission and maybe give the proceeds or some of them to some charity .... atleast thats how it works at our school ... our senior projects have to "help the community in some way "

so i'm going to donate to a charity w/ all the profit i make off this event.
anyone got any good ones i should donate to?

If your friendly with your athletic trainer I would talk to them if they'd be willing to give up a day. They gotta go to all the home sports games for the same liability reasons

A similar project a friend of mine did you may want to consider is designing and building your own box. Shows engineering in a way. He ended up filmin it in the spring with a little write up. Legit stuff plus he got a box for his yard out of it

haven't talked to them yet.

i'm first going to get it approved.

i'm in the process of writing my reasoning to our school insurance company.

here is what i am going to send them.
StartFragmentTowhom it may concern, Skiingis my most beloved sports of all time. During my life I have committed over 40days of skiing per season, and loved every second of it. The time has now forme to choose my senior project. Many showcase a learning curve, either bycreating something from scratch, or learning the trade from one with muchexperience in the field of their choice. My senior project will be to host myown event, an alpine skiing and snowboarding competition. Including threeterrain features for riders to perform ticks on, judges to determine theperformance of each rider, shwag and prizes for the audience and for thecompetitors along with yours truly hosting the competition. RecentlyI handed in my proposal to my teacher, roughly a week later it was handed backto me and stated as “denied”. I went in to see my senior project advisor aboutthe status of my project. She explained to me that it was too dangerous of anevent and that if a competitor was somehow injured, that that person could comeback and hold my high school, The Shoreline School District or even meresponsible for the accident that occurred. Skiingis not allowed as a senior project, but how can Basketball be acceptable asone? Basketball has over 5 times the injuries annually then skiing does. Over68% of all skiers and snowboarders have reported falling several times a seasonwhile skiing or snowboarding, but only 2% had sustained injuries from theirfalls. To further support my argument, that 68% is an annual statistic basedoff of in experienced skiers and snowboarders, most of which have only beendoing the sport for less then 3 seasons. The kind of people in my competitionwill be advanced riders (with experience with over 4+ years of snowboarding/skiing). This will be stated to everyone as an advanced skiing and snowboardingcompetition. Mysenior project advisor mentioned that the major problem with my project wouldbe the fact that a competitor could come back and hold my high school, The ShorelineSchool District or even me responsible for an accident that they might sustainduring my event. There is a simple solution to this problem, Waiver Documents. Everysingle person involved in my event, judges, competitors, feature maintenancecrew, DJ and even me, will sign a legal document relieving my high school, TheShoreline School District and myself of anything accidents that might occur. Iwill arrange a meeting with my attorney and have him help me through theprocess of creating this legal document that will, in simple terms, make it sothe only person responsible for possible accidents will be the person signingthe document. I will make this document so bulletproof that there willabsolutely no way that anyone will be accountable for competitor’s injuriesexcept themselves. Ilove skiing, and I want to learn how to fully create, host, manage and pullthrough an event such as this. The point of a senior project is to learnsomething new. Why not make the most of it and incorporate something new withsomething I am fully experienced with. It will make learning this trade an evenmore enjoyable experience for me, resulting in an overall better final outcomeof my project. Yours Truly, Dave Kercheval EndFragment
