Squarespace Feedback

Hey guys, just looking for some constructive criticism on this website I've been working on. Was hurt and laid up on the couch last summer and I started it as just a fun little side project that I've been contributing to and building for a little over a year now. NS has served as an inspiration for a lot of my outdoor adventures and interest in photography so I figured I'd come to the OG source for a little feedback. All shots from my Canon 6d and cheapo lenses.

Let me know what y'all think, thanks in advance!

You should probably put a watermark on your images. Maybe add some more text to the individual galleries? A little info on each image? BTW nice teets

Been wondering about that, can people really just jack your stuff without one?

Sure.

The watermark is basically your copy right symbol. If you don't do this there isn't a good way to prove that it is your original work It can't be removed from the image. Thats why you display these publicly and keep the originals for yourself to distribute for the $$$.

What's your goal with this site? Right now it seems like a collection of random images and fells a little unfinished. Are you trying to market yourself to potential clients? Is it just a means to share your work? Your bio is split on to two pages and could be condensed. It it is meant to be, as you say a running journal, then perhaps a more linear format might work better.

Most watermarks can easily be removed. Unfortunately in today's age slapping a watermark on your photos isn't enough, and most professional photographers don't. Ever been on a pro photographer's website that has watermarks all over it?

It seems like it was only a few years ago that this was the recommended course of action. Is there a better way of protecting the IP?

Use something other than "Portfolio" in the upper left corner. Your name/business name would be best. "portfolio" does nothing for you, and just distracts the viewer from the photos.

may want to curate the "frozen water" section too, I'd say you've got too many similar shots grouped together ( I think you've got that yurt shot twice) Less is more

honestly it definitely is unfinished, between multiple other jobs, recreating, and working out its been a little tough to find time to work on it and I'm mostly just experimenting with it at this point, hence why I dropped it here for some feedback. I am working on a few blog posts which would give it a little more of a "linear format" for a "running journal" but I'm a perfectionist and a procrastinator so I haven't published any blogs yet. And for the photos it is a little random but it is pretty much in running order of my life. I just wanted it showcase a few albums that are fun to scroll through quickly, while the writing would be for those who want to dig in a little deeper and learn about the stories behind the photos.

And i split the bio in two because I had the longer version at first, but my buddy thought it was too long for the limited attention spans of the internet today. So I made a shorter one, but still liked the longer one so I kept it as a secondary link again, for those who are interested in reading a little bit further. I see how it could feel disjointed and I probably should find a way to combine it all in a concise manner.

yeah I really want to replace the button with a logo for my business, gotta see if my friend who's a graphic designer could hook it up. And yeah I know i could trim down the photos a little bit to just showcase the best, but I was mostly just interested in having some content up there right now. Also thinking of labeling and captioning all of my photos, but I'm wary of the "instagramification" of the outdoors so I sort of like keeping it mysterious.

You're in a great staring place, and your work is solid! The hardest part is starting. I totally agree with the "instagramification" I also like to keep it vague. Just spend an hour a week on it, it will get where you're happy with it.

I'm a graphic designer, logos aren't my specialty, but I do them regularly. I'd be happy to hook you up with something, as long as you're not too picky. Get in contact w/ me via my site: seaburnstudios.com - it was made on squarespace too, I'm always down for more feedback, if you wanna dig in.

Nice pics, love the layout!

I also agree with some words or at least a location with each photo.

Mission statement/Intent sounds lifted and/or silly.

Honest opinion: Cut out all the mediocre pictures and only keep what's good. For example, in the Wydaho gallery, the skeet shooting shot is very meh and poorly framed (eyes go straight to girl on left who adds nothing to the shot then you're stuck cramming all the action and everything that you want to look at in the right half of the frame). Cut that out. Keep your good shots like the tents at the lake one.
