Spokane to Revelstoke Drive

A group of us are flying into Spokane, WA and driving up to Revelstoke in a few weeks. Any input on the drive up to that area is greatly appreciated. None of us have ever done it before. The only info we've really checked out so far is bchighway.com. Should we have chains? Is it common to get stuck in storms due to accidents or just snowfall? Etc, etc.

Thanks!

drivebc.ca for road conditions.

You should never need chains, with a good set of winter tires. however, if you are renting a car, I know first hand that, companies like budget rental cars, put the cheapest of cheap winter tires on there cars.

All that said. there is no high mountain pass's between the 2 locations.

Drive safely, and remember to make the majority of you're travel during daytime hours.

There is 1 ferry that you will have to catch. to time it correctly. make sure you leave "Nelson BC" On or before the hour to time it correctly. otherwise you will be waiting for the next one. it leaves the lower side on the half hour.

We just drove from Calgary to Rev with a rental car, with all season tires ... It was really sketchy, but you dont need chains, just a good pair of winter tires and a good driver.

If you can't find a rental car with good winters, I would recommend chains just in case. As stated, there are no mountain pass's between the two - well, depends on if you take the Paterson crossing or the Waneta crossing. Paterson crossing is the "main" highway and goes up to Rossland then back down to Trail (peaking at 1000M), while Waneta just keeps following the river, but it's not as well maintained of a road.

All Season tires does not equal Winter tires.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated. We land in Spokane at noon and are heading out as soon as we get the Tahoe.

So as of today the ferry is closed until further notice due to ice. Is this normal?

I don't think so... I don't take the ferry too much though, so I don't really know.

If the ferry is down you've gotta go through the Okanogan. Goggle maps says it's only an hour extra, so it's not so bad.

yeah, probably one of the cable ferries. galena bay isn't a cable ferry and I've never heard of it being shut down.

have fun on your trip!

Loving this place! Loving my new Jeronimo's! Cat skiing with K3 the next two days. Staying just west of Revy right off of 1 if anyone wants to grab beers some night
