Speech on the skiing culture

aright guys and gals, im doing a speech on the culture of skiing and would like some ideas from you guys on what to toss in there or if you have any info i can use for references such as quotes or internet links to help back up my speech with factual info. Its due next week so im not really in a rush.

and before anybody says searchbar, ive searched and havent really found anything.

Well not too sure on the direction of your speech....buthttp://www.anchorage.net/979.cfmThat talks about how skiing in that area helps the economy...sort of a shitty article, but some nice points in it
Theres some good articles about the Olympics, how it brings together a nation (AP always has a few to choose from, the links are always changing)
Now I know Olympics isn't really Newschool or anything, but for the purpose of a paper, it could definately help backup a topic or idea
Let me know the direction your speech is going
 
awesome man! thanks for that link i will definitely use some of that. well i was gonna start with the history of skiing and how it began, then go into the different styles briefly. its not going to be about newschool skiing, more about just the sport and skiing community in general. there was an article about a ski bum in CO that was jailed for "trespassing" because he lived out of his car in one of the parking lots, and im gonna use that to talk about the more core ski bums.

im not exactly sure the direction im taking it yet, that just a idea that i had in mind, but things will change as i write out my main points. also the speech isnt going to be written, i have to get up there and just talk without reading off a paper
 
I'm gonna search for more articles if I find some I'll post them, but yea the one about the ski bum in CO seems like it will work great
Make sure you include something about how schools have ski teams, and it's a sport to some kids in school just like soccer or baseball or football. That should be a good point
 
^skiing culture in general. i could do just freeskiing but im not sure i can talk for 7mins about that without loosing some people.
 
I think a cool theme for the whole speech would be kind of like 'why people enjoy skiing'

It sounds silly but kinda just like look into what draws people to skiing. There has to be something about it that makes people devote their lives to it. Especially when you look at it - how does skiing benefit people. I mean injuries, money, time, energy.. there has to be a better way to spend time yet people spend their whole lives skiing. Why must people ski?

I would intro with a narration of the story of the ski bum who got kicked off for trespassing - catches people's attention then goes into why he is like that. You can also end with a few sentences concluding his story.

Don't start with the history....YAWN...never start at the beginning of time for a paper or speech... start at an interesting point that introduces the topic
