I know I'm going to get flamed for saying this, but trust me on this one I know what I'm talking about - I have several family members in the industry, and I'm friends with the owner of a high quality sound system store. Anyway, here goes...

BOSE speakers are not worth the $. They aren't actually thaat good. True, they do have good products, and their top-of-the-line product is good, but the equivalent speaker to BOSE's top of the line from somebody like JBL is about their middle of the pack speaker. The top of the line speakers that you could get from JBL, Klipsch, Harman Kardon, Totem, etc. would be better quality than anything you can get from BOSE. You may be able to get good deals on BOSE speakers, because they have done an amazing job at marketing and can therefor sell for less, but if you are really looking for quality then I'd go for another brand. I have a pair of JBL speakers as my desk speakers, and deamn they are soo sick. I also have a bunch of totem columns downstairs - which are very high end speakers in vocals, but do lack a little in producing powerful bass... and another set of massive JBLs in the basement. Anyway, I just don't reccomend BOSE. Many people think they're soo good, because BOSE has cornered the market in advertising, and in general it's all that people know of with regards to speakers just because they haven't even heard of other companies. Lastly, on a lot of their lower-end speakers, or their tweeters in surround and desk systems, BOSE uses old technology.

And if anybody doubts me on quality, a couple of years ago one of the mega-speakers at the ACC (a BOSE speaker) blew up mid-hockey game... kinda sucked.

Anyway here are some alternatives...http://www.klipsch.com/http://www.jbl.com/http://www.harmankardon.com/http://www.totemacoustic.com/ca/en/

Anyway, check out those links and PM me if you have any questions I'd love to help!

I also am asking for speakers for christmas but am more interested in a 5.1 system. I understand the actual speakers, how they work etc. but I'm still confused on how you need to hook it up to a macbook pro. I've read that you need to hook it up to an optical out port but the MBP doesn't have this built in. Can I upgrade my internal sound-card or do you have to buy some sort of external converter/sound-card? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

well for starters you're prob gonna need an amp to power the 5.1 cuz i doubt the mbp will put out any good sound with out a helpful boost. as for the soundcard, i'm not sure... ask the n00bs at the apple store they know everything
