who out there is trying to become fluent? what do you do to get better?
i've been selecting the spanish option on the atm and self-checkout. its not much but you pick up useful vocab. and listening to mexican radio in the mornings on the way to school.

hahaha i do self checkouts in spanish. i watch a lot of telemundo also. or i go to ross or the grocery outlet on the eastside and try to have little convos. most of em think im a total moron, but idc.

i totally agree. i just don't have the money yet. but there are other ways of picking up vocab, slang idioms here in the U.S. i'm just talking about building vocab from day to day

best way to force yourself to learn is to live in a spanish speaking country for a bit. I lived in Dominican Republic for a few months and I picked up a lot. unfortunately i dont have to use any of what i learned over here and forgot it all. My abuela says im a failure as a dominican.

I took spanish for fives years and you will never become fluent unless you live in a spanish speaking country for a while.

if you wanna learn spanish DONT listen mexican radios....they've got a strange version of it...talk southamerican spanish...im from argentina and we speak mostly like people in chile and uruguay..we have a very fluently way of speaking which anybody can understand...

watch movies in spanish. some DVDs have a spanish option, or you could just watch movies that are originally in spanish, like pan's labyrinth. kids movies are the best for picking things up fast though. for example, we watched finding nemo in one one of my spanish classes.

most of the mexicans I work with speak lazy slang-filled spanish. If you speak like that in south america or spain they might be slightly confused.

I would recommend hanging out in a mexican bar on occasion. As long as you aren't a dick they are very nice and entertained by your presence. In the summer it's nice to drink Sol, Pacifico and other delicious mexican brews so we started frequenting Rancho Viejo (most of the mexicans drank bud light though, wierd). Drinks were frequently bought for us. It's also hilarious how they like to sing to women.
