South Shore on fire

Yes it is sad but it has to happen eventually, Some of the large Sequoia trees will even survive, They are protected by the bark. and the underbrush should have been cleaned up if they didnt want it to happen. If you dont have your natural regular fires like normaly would occur, this is what you end up wiyh, Massive uncontrolable fires, Its like living in New Orleans, its not a question of if, it is when?

Its a sad reality and thats it.

 
yeah, when I first posted that it was what some of the affected people on TGR had heard, but obviously it was never confirmed. They will probably know for sure in the next few days.

nonetheless, they are saying it was man made, so campfire, cigarette, spark from a off road vehicle......

the next few days look like it could be pretty scary. Gusts up to 40 MPH

 
I am a firefighter with North Tahoe, SMHC Handcrew. We worked from the inital start of the fire until 6pm monday.  We hit our work to rest regulation limit and have been pulled from the line for the last 20 hrs. or so.   The fire crowned out Sunday causing the rapid growth or the fire.  When the fire reached the structures, 200 + foot flames ripped through buildings like they were paper.  LPG ( Propane ) tanks and other conbustables could be head exploding in the distance.  The fire was held on sevral different roads with numerous spots occuring across the line.  After our handcrew was releved in the nabhorhood by CDF engines we moved to Fallen Leaf Lake Rd. and constructed sevral miles of fire line to save structures below.  I will be returning to the fire line tomarrow at 6 am.

2 Engine co. fire fighters were burnt over today. They deployed their fire shelters and survived with no critical injuries.

44% contained with 1889 firefighters

Engines-145

Crews- 54

Helicopters-11

Dozers-2

Water Tenders- 14

3100 achers

Thoughts and prayers go out to all affected.

hey if any of you guys live in reno, carson, tahoe area and want to donate clothes or furniture... let me know, my mom is trying to get stuff together for some of the victims. thanks!
 
to everyone who says there needs to be a clean up program and controlled burns...there is. if youve ever vistited there or lived there youll tons of small piles of brush in a lot of the woods. theese are brush clean ups and aren't burnt eventually. this goes on when conditions are safe. but when the conditions were like they were this year its hard to prevent somehting like this. the snow levels around sierra are at 28% right now (prob not anymore) from usual. also its had the lowest percipitation since 1988 i hear. and if any of u lived there this winter youll know how bad it really was.

very very dry conditions in such a windy area that is so so populated w/ woods makes it almost unavoidable.

best of luck to anyone affected in this tragedy. i haven't been in tahoe since january and man it kills me to see those pictures w/ that kind of backround.
 
heres the deal

people who lived here DID realize they they were suceptible to wild fires, unfortuanly, when they tried to remove fire fuels, the TRPA stopped them. Had these fuels been removed, the fire probally still would have started, it just would have been so much easier to contain and put out.
 
yea thats mad shitty, i saw this thread earlier, and was like whatever but then i saw the news. this is serious.

at least you dont live in maine, and thats saying a lot since your shits on fire S. lake tahoe
 
Planes don't put out fires, they slow them until ground forces can get there.

Also this is about the time tahoe starts burning, the only other signficant fire recent basin history (gondola) started on july 3rd.

 
they said today it was a campfire, not a cigarette. Still man made. Wondering if they know how did it yet.

But yeah, mad props to the firefighters and everyone else who helped out! Glad they seem to have it under control.
 
I just got back home to slt yesterday from Boulder and Portland. I had heard about the fire and had friends who called me, yet I was completely distanced from the devestation and the destruction that had taken place here. I really can't believe it. I feel so bad for the families who have lost their homes, animals, and all belongings. The sense of community is so strong here right now.

4th of July is coming up, huge holiday here, i wonder if people are going to actually want to come up though...with all the ash in the lake and regulations that are in place.
