Sorry about the bar

Is it better to say nothing or say I’m sorry I’m from Canada when I put the bar down on the chair?

yeah just yell bar and put it down. I get scared of heights sometimes so I'm glad when someone else does it for me. say sorry if you whack me in the head but that's why I wear a helmet

this made me lol but seriously-

it's amazing how many people have slammed the bar into the back of my dome without any verbal warning

Another great reason for a helmet, you can't always tell when somebody is Canadian

I have learned it’s basically everyone else except Americans that drop the bar before even leaving bottom station

The places I’ve been in the east use the bar.

-whiteface

-jay peak

-killington

-Stowe

Yes and there’s places in the west that use the bar?

I was implying Americans overall don’t prefer to use it.

From my limited experience, Tahoe and mammoth, no one uses the bar.

closing day at mammoth there was a guy in a banana hammock complaining about the seat being slippery from his sunscreen but still didn’t put down the bar

most experience skiers dont use the bar, ive been skiing my entire life and I never use it. if someone I am with wants to use it, thats fine, but most ppl I know dont like the bar down unless they want to rest their legs.

the east coast is way different, isnt it the law in vermont?

6 packs freak me out so the bar goes down on those every time, quads and under are okay usually just put it down cuz I like to lean on it.

Yeah I have bone spurs on the top of my foot so the bar is mega relief lol

everyone talking about different places and how they ride gotta understand that falling 10/15ft isn’t going to discriminate.

Hard to find any hard data, but it does not seem like there is much correlation between safety bar use vs fatalities from chairlift falls.

Small amount of fatalities, but every year there's always a couple idiots who fall off.

I used to never use the bar as a kid, but now I use it nearly every time. I started getting nightmares of falling off the lift a few years ago and I've been a bit spooked since. Crazy to think I went so many years without it, especially given how sketch the 40+ year old lifts were at my local hill. I knew of several people who fell from to the chairlift swinging or slippery seats during a freezing rain event. We'd still call 'em pussies and insist on riding without it anyway.

It is in fact a law in Vermont that you must put the bar down but no one enforces it for the most part. People there definitely use the bar more than in states where there is no law I would say however.

You’re saying people do and don’t use the bar across the USA. Basically people are people.

idk what your point is. But I will say I’ve skied across the world and Americans are the least zealous about the bar. I put it down because of my wife. Don’t really know what to tell you

it's required by law in vermont lol, not sure about other states tho

Working this season as a lifty in NZ and its a ski field requirement that we have to enforce - the bar goes down on every chair. I’ve worked in the states where that wasn’t the case but I’m told to stop the lift and yell out if they haven’t put it down. Haven’t gotten a clear answer why but I’ve heard it has to do with insurance where if a guest gets on with a head injury the bar will theoretically keep them from sliding off if they pass out? People here don’t mind it and I don’t anymore either. Gor hit in the head a few times but now you just kinda lean back once you sit down

As a tall skier, please notify me if the party bar is going to be engaged. Hit in the head too many times.

This. If you've ever gotten caught by a surprise gust of wind on the Flyer at Jay or Face Lift at WF, you'll feel differently.

Our whole crew almost got tossed off at Whiteface one day, I am now on team bar down.

I sometimes don't wear a helmet because being a tall dude getting nailed in the head by the bar can give my neck whiplash. Certain resorts have bars that are low AF Sunday River for one.

Punching gaper dads in the face for putting the bar down with no warning should be allowed.

I think if you’re gonna put down the bar, you should check if it’s good to go down. And put it down slowly. lots of safety bars have supports or handles that make contact with the seat base. Getting your pants or leg stuck under that isn’t fun either.

Why do people like the bar down genuinely asking

- lean on

- rest your legs

- false sense of security

- because im a communist canuck and the signs said so

Anyone else ever gotten the semi-greened out sleepies and then you suddenly come-to and realize you're dangling 50+ feet above the ground and get a second of vertigo?

Thats why I put the bar down.

feel like the only valid time is when there's sustained 30mph and over or 30-40mph and over gusts. if it's a fixed double, maybe more like 20-25mph lol
