So, my terrible form aside....if I try a spin and land switch, if my body position leans too far back my calves kill where the tops of my boots end. Could it be that my boots aren't the right fit for my terrible jumping abilities (cut too low)? Could you recommend something that might be better?

What you are describing sounds to me like shin bang. It happens when the muscles that are attached to your shin bones pull away from your bones and tear. This is a result from landing or skiing in the back seat and can take a while to heal. It can be very painful and required rest. You can try to prevent this by stretching out the muscles near you shin by raising your foot and pointing your toes to the ceiling and then to the floor. This strengthens the muscles surrounding your calves.
