OK I am sorry for another Iraq post! Really, I will stop, I will I promise. But it's just frustrating. Anyway here: My friend who just got back from Iraq made friends with a bunch of Iraqis and we have been emailing them and he has talked on the phone a few times since April with them. They all wish the US wasn't there (duh) but know they can't do anything about it so accept it and hope the US is able to do something successful while we are there. My friend supports Bush just as much as some of you do but after being in Iraq, he is mortified at what we are doing. He said even the most staunch Iraqi supporters of Bush are becoming afraid because of what Bush says about the new government. You see, in Iraq, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, etc in the all the Arab League nations, their governmentes are based on their religion. It's just the way things are. Our government is based on ideals from our founding fathers, theirs is based on the ideals of mohamed (sp). The US is trying to create a government in Iraq that does not acknowledge the religion as a viable basis for a government. It was just interesting to hear these intelligent, educated, reasonable Iraqi men and women talk about how much the US is trying to change their lives. Sure they have more electricity, better jobs, or cleaner water. But Bush and his govt are trying to change them into americans, and they are scared of this. They don't want to lose their traditions and way of life. It's kind of scary to read these emails, I will see if I can get some off my buddy's laptop to post on here so you all can read them.

any honest republican would realize that what is going on in Iraq is necessary to establish a republic. a republic cannot exist as a non-secular state, the freedoms that are required for a republic to function simply aren't available to all citizens (notably women).

then it would fail to be a republic. there would be no reason to instate such a government if women were denied the right to vote and lacked the same rights as men.

Attitash, try telling that to the people that live there idiot. They don't want a republic, their religion is more important than any form of government. Get over yourself, think outside Western beliefs. I love our form of govt, i love being american and living in the west. BUT they live in the middle east, they are not us, they are them. they are different. they don't want a republic like ours, why would they. what right do we have to go into somewhere and tell them they need a different form of govt. Maybe it makes more sense to us (ie more rights to women, more representation of the public, etc.) but they are not us.

It really has nothing to do with our culture. It has to do with giving the most people the most power to shape the new government to their liking. If it turns out that women really don't want to vote then they either won't or they'll vote to disenfrancise themselves. I really don't see the harm in that.

i'm surprised that fuck clown isn't sending hordes of missionaries to try to convert them all to christianity while he's busy fucking their country up. our ''republic'' is supposed to be completely separate from any religious influence, yet he ends every speech with ''god bless america,'' which, to me, sounds more like ''fuck you if you're not christian''

yes, lets force the minority to not vote because the majority is too timid to do so...thats a healthy idea. under the system being assembled, the people of iraq will be able to decide how they want their government run.

ECFS... there's a lot of conjecture in what you say, and not much evidence. Basically, 'They don't SAY they want free elections and western values, but that's just because they're timid. Deep down, they really do.' Odd way of looking at things.

Given the strict rules regarding free-speech in much of the Arab world, I don't think it is that outrageous.

Here's an example: On a recent trip to Egypt, I asked our otherwise talkative guide what he thought of the Egyptian president. In a hushed voice he said 'the walls have ears' and left it at that.

And that was in Egypt...nevermind Iran or Saudi Arabia.

Well, it's a good thing they have people like you to tell them how much better their lives will be after you change them. Otherwise, they might get the idea that the U.S. was forcing it's values on them for no reason.

never mind, this is why i don't get into political debates very often. i just can't stand W in any way, shape, or form, and i feel his motives for the iraq war are more religious and personal than for the good of their country (or ours for that matter). but i'm biased, it's hard to be a completely non-religious person and try to support a zealot. especially a dumb zealot
