Sochi Slopestyle could either be sick or really fucking shitty.

I'm starting to lean towards shitty....The fact that Goepper is seemingly becoming the face of the sport, and will most likely be the most viewed skier in the eyes of non skiers is almost an insult. Freeskiing is about individuality, and Goepper represents a conformed and robotic version of freeskiing. He can flip and spin like a mother fucker but if it doesn't look good what't the fucking point. Props to the guy for winning mad gold medals, but I don't like the fact that he seems to be the media's ambassador of freeskiing, that's not how I want non skiers to view skiing.

Also after years of watching skiers and films and edits it's almost strange to think of different countries competing against each other. Freeskiing comps always hold the sole purpose of progressing the sport as a whole, but this seems to be very different than the olympics' principle; to compete agains other countries. Sure it will progress the sport and push it to places it's never been, but is that necessarily a good thing? I don't want freeskiing to go the same route as skateboarding did, where you see p rod and malto on fucking espn and shit.

sorry to rant my unpopular opinion (at least I think it's unpopular).

if i see henrik throwin up wu tang signs and barking, and just afterbanging the shit out of every trick, then ill think it was a good slopestyle

Oh look, another "i don't like nick goepper's style, i hope he doesn't become the face of our sport" thread.

I seriously don't get the hate for Goepper. Kid's a monster. What other styles do you want him to have? If everyone did everything like Harlaut does you'd call them robots too. It's subjective

i think Goepper is doing a great job representing our sport to non-skiers. Did you watch his interview on Letterman last night? He did a hell of a job. I think his style in X games was on point too.

well i guess i shouldn't say that, he did as good a job as anyone could've done on that show. Letterman is a jackass.

So despite security issues, terrorism threats, Olympic committee/political corruption, and the induction of our sport to a truly world wide stage for the first time, your biggest concern is that one of the US team members is really good at skiing and arguably the man to beat in slopestyle right now?

Tight. Sounds like a REAL valid argument to me.

it's the olympics, it will be just like X games but without some skiiers and some more unkown skiiers nothing else will really change that much

The general public can't differentiate between the style of someone like Goepper and say Vinnie, Wallisch, or Harlaut. Heck, in the world of doubles and triples, I can hardly tell whose looks better.

The general public will see crazy, impossible tricks on skis vs. crazy, impossible tricks on skis. Nothing more and nothing less.

dude you're getting way into your own head. if the olympics ruins skiing for you, then quit. skiing doesn't need you. skiing could use a few less assholes anyway

I'm not annoyed that Goepper is absolutely destorying the comp scene.

I would be annoyed if he had closing section in a L1P video.

It's good that the comp side of our sport is in no way the most important part to most of us. I understand that people think Nick has a robotic style but when I see people like Vanular saying stuff like 'that makes me want to ski with poles again'I just think get over it. The competition scene has changed. Crazy to watch but it doesn't seem real.

There are tons of ways that the olympics could end up being a huge flop. Nick being awesome is certainly not one of them,.

basically this...some of the same judges that have been judging x-games for years, some of the same athletes that have been in x-games for year, just more money in advertising and freeskiing being recognized as a legitimate sport by the public...

...but all we hear from the 12-15 year old population within freeskiing is, "ZOMG!!! NO TAMMY WHAMSTICKS!!! THE SPORT IS RUINED!!!"

maybe if this was two years ago when goepper was winning comps with his flying spaghetti monster landings and odd style, i would object. but he has clearly refined his skiing and brought style to it. even through a screamin seamin jap sw dub 9 in x this year. and he banged the shit out of his triple. he may not be my favorite skier in terms of style but you can't deny that he's an amazing skier and definitely bringing style to the table.

You guys make me fucking sick. What would you rather have to represent America, Some kid that has unreal style in YOUR eyes and finishes dead last with a couple of steezy afterbangs and some gang signs at the end of his run, or someone like Geopper, that will have a great shot at winning Olympic Gold with technical smooth runs? Some how you guys will find away to bash him even if he won the olympics..its kind of funny really..

Lets get real, Geopper will be the face of freestyle skiing, hell, he already is. He is a nice kid that respects every other skier he competes with, he wins A LOT, and he doesn't talk shit. He probably doesn't even read all of these stupid fucking threads, and if he does he just laughs hysterically.

I, for one, am honored to have someone like geopper represent OUR COUNTRY at the Olympics. It will show the world the raw talent and the crazy thing that we can do on two sticks under our feet.

Fuck the haters , Kill it USA

I'm not at all saying goepper "ruined" skiing for me. In fact I'm not personally hating goepper. Props to the guy he can fucking throw down. All I'm saying is, his image is not one that I believe represents freeskiing as a whole. I mean when the phrase "face of our sport" is tossed around... obviously many people including myself think of wallisch...

I don´t agree with this at all. If you want more variation and "free" in freeskiing you should wish it went the same route as Skateboarding. No Olympics, Streetleague-like competitions and and the bulk of the riders focused on filming. That´s what I´d like to see in skiing

that's exaclty what I'm saying....... I'd much rather see progression in the film side rather than competition side

I agree, I just find it strange to view skiing from the olympic point of view, with separation of athletes based on country representation. I never think of certain skiers being from other areas, I just think of them all as skiers contributing to the same sport and chasing the same goal.

Goepper will get the publics attention.

The people that will catch on and start skiing will soon see all the other skiers and get the idea.

It doesn't really matter if he has an ugly style, if it makes people notice our sport then the task is complete.

I mean, imo Tony Hawk has the ugliest fucking style i've seen, but he makes people notice the sport..

The kid mixed a screamin seamen into his x games slope run, I don't see how that is in any way robotic or boring.

If you're thinking about Goepper's influence on the non-ski community, think back to what got you into freeskiing. Like all other action sports, it was all the crazy shit these guys were doing which opened up a whole new look at sports. Goepper throwing dubs and triples in different directions with all sorts of cool grabs would definitely have attracted me to this sport because of its insanity. Once you get into freeskiing, then you care about style and stuff, but going upside down 3 times is what reels in the public.

Screamin Seaman switch 9 japan? No style? Dude go fuck yourself, if Henrik had come up with that insane and super stylish trick you would paddle to Sweden and suck his dick. You're just a douche.

Thats the thing though, he didn't come up with it, Kai Mahler did.

Geopper doesn't do his own tricks, he sees a trick someone else does, and does it. Look at all the tricks in his slopestyle runs, they're just piggybacked off what everyone else does, he picks something someone did that scored well and he copies it.

I want to see him innovate something, contribute something to our sport, put out a film segment, instead of just taking what everyone else is doing and rolling it into his little ball of robotic imitation in order to win competitions.

Completely off topic but i just watched some of the Shaun White documentary...Hear me out, I might not compete/watch contests but you should respect certain people and their goals/mindsets in how they participate. His coach is a prick and its his last chance at Olympics and probably competing for the most part. He worked his ass off just so he could have one more shot. He threw his whole life away to competing and sponsors. Yes they are robots but they are the ones making a living off of it. Sorry some skier isn't going to be throwing zero spin blunts and cork 5 safety's. It's the god damn olympics, people want to see flips and as much rotation as possible. They don't want Max Hill buttering rollers while hornbeck afterbangs every landing for atleast 200 yards. Contests have never been just about "steeze bruh"....End of drunk rant

P.s why does someone watching goepper affect your skiing? oh right it doesn't. Fucking kids
