So, my town is burning.

I don't know if it's on the national news or not, but southern California is burning. The Santa Ana winds are blowing. They dry the hell out of everything and trigger fires at this time every year, but it usually isn't this bad. Sustained winds of 50-60 mph, gusts to 90, and hot as hell. Across town in Castaic there were sustained winds clocked at 108 mph. Fucking rediculous. The biggest of all the fires in southern California was literally across the street from me last night, and several of my friends had to evacuate their homes. Pretty scary. It's currently at 35,000 acres, and the winds aren't supposed to even start to die down until tomorrow night. Check out this map- http://santa-clarita.com/news/fire-maps.asp. There are literally three separate brush fires going on in my city right now. Last night, this was the view out my brother's bedroom window-

Crazy shit.

I feel you.

Irvine has its own group of fires right as I am writing this. Ours appears to be arson related, which really is a douche bag thing to do. Can't hardly breathe outside. My throat is all messed up from breathing in ash all day.

Our prayers are with you mate.

Two more separate brush fires started burning in Santa Clarita last night. They're worried that if the winds change, all 5 fires here will merge into an "80,000 acre monster" that will burn 40 miles to the ocean. Fack.

i wish you luck man, i used to live in pleasanton, CA not sure where that is in relation to where you are

Semi-current update from this afternoon. It is no longer near mi casa, but it's interesting.

Story Highlights

[*]Size: 361,180 acres burned

[*]Evacuations: More than 500,000 residents have left their homes

[*]Damage: At least 1,450 homes, 100 commercial buildings, 80 outbuildings destroyed

[*]Casualties: Two people killed, 44 injured

Here is the picture from space-

The fires(red dots) grouped together the furthest north are where I live.

well fire is a natural occurence that is needed to renew forests by returning essential nutrients to the soil. its just unfortunate that it affects peoples lives.

That shot from space made the front page of the Orange County Register -- our biggest newspaper, and in the article the do confirm what Seanpistol is saying that there are no clouds in this picture, just smoke. The problem is that you will notice that the smoke is heading out to sea, instead of flowing eastward, so when the Santa Ana winds die down and the weather goes back to normal, we will get all that smoke back blown in this area. This means that the already horrible air quality here in California is going to totally be hazardous for the next week or so. Bummer.

I want to move to Revelstoke, BC and buy a small condo there and ski every day for the rest of my life with the Mrs. and kids. Did you all hear that this new resort in BC will have 6,000 of verticle?

Holler.

i think the real-estate train left a little while ago. considering the place is slated to open december of this year.

probably real-estate or rental units away from the mountain would be a good spot, but of course im sure prices have been inflated already in anticipation for the influx of investment.

arent some people claiming al quieda?

i find that funny that they have to resort to those types of accusations.

any sign of it slowing down?

It's just about done. The only fire left near me personally is halfway to the ocean and 80% contained. There are a couple others in San Diego county that are around 80% contained as well and everything is out. On Wednesday night the winds completely stopped and the relative humidity went up. Now it's just smoky as hell outside since there are no winds to blow the smoke away.

A sad thing I found out yesterday... 20,000 acres of avacado trees burned. 1/3 of Californias crop. Now the price of avacados are going to go wayyyyyyyyyyyy up. Bummer!

The fire in Orange County is not even 30% contained yet, and this is the fire that apparently was arson related. I have not heard anything about terrorism, yet, but who knows. They are offering $250,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction. I wish I knew something, that would rule.

Our fire seems to be the only one left that is not under control and still threatening houses, etc. I am sure that with the rise in humidity this weekend, maybe even some rain, they might be able to gain some ground on it.

Ooops, yeah. The Santiago Canyon fire is still ragin'. They said if you see a white F-150 with chrome running bars that it may be the possible arsonist and to call it in. Like there aren't 500,000 of those.
