So I Just Built This...

I just made my first Flash-Pod. It is a 16 GB Ipod Video. I have always hated Hard drives, refusing to buy another HD based player after seeing so many break. So I went ahead and built my dream Ipod. 16 GB of pure flash RAM memory. The UI interacts so quick its amazing (no HD to spin to get data) and will increase my battery life like crazy. Oh and to touch it off I replaced the black click wheel with a white one. This thing seriously kicks ass. Check it out.

Message me if you want more info!

Damn dude that is nice! Did you have to change the connections at all really when you switched from the HD to the flash?

Nope, Finally the chinese came out with a good cheap adapter...cost me 18 on ebay. People have done this before and soldered like 64 wires to make it work hahahhaha. This was just plug in and go. If anyone is interested in doing this I will make a tutorial and put it up on here!

I have been working on Ipods for about a year now, so it took maybe 4 minutes replace the HD. But the click wheel took me about 15 minutes to do because you need to disassemble the whole entire ipod.

Or if you don't want a HD and want flash, you can just sell the HD on ebay and come out even, if not make profit.

And to those interested in the tutorial...I will work on it!

this is sick. if u can tell me what the name of the addapter is id love that. i have a extra ipod laying around and i deff wanna do this. and u got 16 g of flash dor 18 bucks or what kinda flash did u use. if u dont wanna post all of this plese pm me. thanks dude this is a sick mod

thanks man. the CF card was around 70 for me...I think you were looking at the price below it for something else. But yeah I will make a post later tonight or tomorrow outlining every single step and exactly what you will need.

That's awesome man.

Would you be interested in building and selling one?

If so, I'd be interested. Cause I don't know if I'd trust myself to do it, unless its not too hard?

it shouldn't be hard at all. Opening the case is the hardest part and really the only hard part about that is not being a pussy about possibly scratching your ipod. From what I can tell, you pop open the case plug an adapter into the harddrive cable and you're done. The click wheel is a little more complicated but still probably not too difficult.

You cant just switch out the flash cards for larger ones with the Nano? I'm pretty sure my friend has a first gen nano thats had that done to it.

Whoops youre right, I was under the impression that solid state drives were a whole different ball game. Now I see they use flash memory, thanks haha~

Nanos have their flash memory soldered to the main board, people have swapped them but it's not plug and play or easily do-able for the average person.

Wow thanks every one for the feedback!

To answer your question, all you need to do is restore the Ipod through Itunes after the mod and it gets the necessary software.

To the question about the nano...nanos memory chips are soldered onto the motherboard, and are produced in no viable form to purchase.

And yes you can get 32 gig compact flash cards...

Well I love how Creative has large capacity flash players. However, I have an apple computer, which they (last time I checked) don't support. So lets relax on the cock sucking statements eh?

sick man but i have no idea what you were talking about butstill sick you got 16 things of memory and shit thats better than 15 things

hahahaha so true! basically there are 2 types of viable memory right now. Hard Drive memory and Flash or RAM memory. Most players use HD's because they are very cheap to produce and have huge storage capacities. However, they have moving parts inside (picture a turn table that reads and writes off a record crammed inside a little box) which can easily be damaged as they are super fragile. One drop and it can be toast. They also are terrible performers in the cold weather, because again there are moving parts which cannot tolerate the cold. So basically, HD's are very cheap, great memory abilities, but very unreliable.

Now flash memory or Random Access Memory is a solid state card or chip. It is almost indestructible because there are no moving parts. You literally could throw that card above off a sky scraper and it would most likely work no problem. It also is very quick at retrieving information, as it is random access and does not need to wait for the Hard drive to spin to the correct location to get data. Another great thing is it does not use any power to operate. It merely has current run through it to get the information, where as the HD needs a ton of battery power to spin the disc (picture a CD player compared to an small flash of course mp3 player). Now this all sounds great and it is, but the catch is Flash memory is really expensive! As you remember apple just a few years ago was charging 250 for a 4 gb nano, when if you spent 50 more, you could get a 30 gb HD player.Only 4 years ago, 8 gb's was

$226!!! Totally impractical. So now prices are dropping, but apple is being stubborn and not using the available technology to offer us a reasonable priced high capacity flash player. (right now the nano should be offered in 16/32 gb's)

Hope that helped.

Oh and to those interested in replacing your click wheel....I just remembered that I actually replaced the face place (black) onto a white ipod frame. So if you are interested, you can order a new face plate off ebay for very cheap and achieve either what I have, or white ipod with black wheel(looks amazing)
