Snowplowing Controversy

I honestly agree that snowplowing is bad for rails. Like it just pushes all the snow to the sides and makes it super icy. If you sideslip, at least the snow stays in the middle ya know?

This is the problem ma dood. People were upset with Hornbecks post because even though it is "only intended at up and comers" it is seen by everyone and has the greatest impact on those who are trying to learn. Seeing that shit about not being "allowed" to pizza going into a feature or anywhere only will make people learning how to ski less interested. The gatekeeping aspect is about making learning our sport inviting and fun, this kind of rhetoric does the opposite. If you don't like someone else's skiing then don't watch it, instead you went out of your way to criticize her just to be an asshat.

Basically this is also elitist backcountry culture just with park bros, ski however tf you want. I understand a critique of skiing also we are all picky after watching so much, but I feel like everyone is just attacking each other these days. Community grows through uplifting each other not pointing out every flaw.

Just because someone has "og status" or is a better skier than someone else it doesn't mean that they are above criticism and other people can't respond to it as they see fit. Personally I agree that snowplows don't look that good and I don't think its actual gatekeeping since it's clearly not directed at beginners. Sometimes, good skiers sometimes have bad opinions, and some less-skilled skiers have good opinions. Shitting on Mckenna Brown's skiing, as people have been doing in this thread, is dumb since it has nothing to do with the point she made.

I don't think anyone has been "blowing smoke up everyone's ass" in this thread or anything related. Mostly this thread has been attacking peoples personal skiing level and trying to associate their skiing ability with the validity of their argument. There will always be pro skiers who we want to watch, I am pointing out the issue with this criticism and how it is seen by people who are learning. The gatekeeping discussion started with respect to the accessibility of skiing (from a social level for this particular argument, financials is a different story), and this conversation is making me see what this community is a bit fucked these days and no wonder only cis men use newschoolers now.

The discussion of gatekeeping and accessibility is mostly with regard to the minority of skiers who are learning, but without people learning our sport it dies so why are we such dicks?

Yeah but the fact of the matter was that her take was stupid, and the idiot tried to somehow make it a race / gender issue.

It’s not the be all end all, and I believe everyone has right to critique…. but you can’t deny that skill and expertise helps backs up your claims.

Say someone gave a shitty opinion about health, yet barely has much experience/ knowledge in the medical field… you would highlight their lack of qualification.

Same thing is happening to McKenna in this thread.

Also if you try to make a race/gender issue out of something that’s not… you’re kind of wretched person and should expect some mud slung your way.

But that is what I am trying to bring attention to, it doesn't really matter who is making the argument, the ramifications of points like that have been long felt in skiing. Wether its not being cool for wearing your goggles over your helmet, having the right gear, or snowplowing between features.

I am more just trying to point out that its not productive to criticize in these ways and does not help grow our sport and community it will just make it more closed off. Skiers are only getting better and the quality of content is still top notch with like 40 movies about to come out in the next month. We dont need this discussion of saying what is "okay and not okay" to do, good skiing will always be popular, if its not good then it wont last, but we dont need to tear each other apart.

Also a bit of a side note but kinda fucked how our community (or at least some members) constantly criticizes female skiing still, even if its a similar quality male video it often wont get criticism. That's kinda what I mean about accessibility...

It was misunderstood and criticized and applied to everyone .Pretty sure no one here want to be snow plowing here anyways. Pretty sure most people around want the park to be a welcoming environment. Also this message was directed to more experienced skiers as a tip. Like if you’re hitting your first rail ever then I don’t think people are gonna expect you to put that into practice. Case closed.

comparing mcckenna brown to xgames skiers is a silly double standard. Nobody says street skiers suck because they can't trippple cork like andy spaghetti, the same should apply to her. I think her skiing is very pleasant and relaxing to watch.

I chatted with Mckenna (who generally does have good style, can certainly ski between features, and never snowplows). We reached a concensus that what he was saying is right but how he said it is dangerous because he has a wide audience some of whom are impressionable young kids. We should impress upon these kids that park skiing is welcoming and friendly, we can gently recommend what sort of things they should do or not to look better. But the language that he used was not gentle or necessarily kind.

I get that it is frustrating watching people people think they are better than they are, especially if certain small things can be corrected. But being a dick about it makes you come off as acting better than you are. And it's undoubtable that Mike Hornbeck knows what hes talking about and should be respected but he has the responsibility to also represent the sport as something inviting and fun instead of tough and rough simply due to his lack of articulation. It's definitely not gatekeeping but if his message can easily be misinterpreted, he executed the post poorly.

They’re rich white girls who throw around serious terms to try and validate their shitty ideas. Thus detracting from actual race and gender inequality issues.

Nothing about snowplowing is good. Ski shape does not cater to snowplowing, they are not designed to counter each other's movement. More importantly, it is tremendously terrible for your knees. I hate that it is taught to adults learning to ski. The only reason snowplowing is viable is that many young kids lack the developed muscles and coordination to properly turn or slow down and stop on skis and are light enough there isn't much force involved. Adults and adolescents are stronger, but also have a lot more mass that is being leveraged through their now poorly positioned knee joints. Doing it switch does not put the same stresses through your ligaments but it still reinforces the habit.

Yes in fact I have before with great success. We tried to teach my friend's brand new friend how to wedge turn his way down the bunny slope and it did not go well. A few runs later we said forget that and taught him hockey stop and parallel turns and he was skiing down from the top of Abasin by the end of the day

Yeah I agree it was super obvious that race and gender had nothing to do with it. Probably 95% of Mike Hornbeck's followers are white males. Especially the race part like do they think they're not also white

Devil's advocate Mckenna was reposting somebody else's response to it so she might have just agreed with the general sentiment and not thought that race or gender were involved, but it's shitty either way

Anyway, you people are taking the wrong thing away from what I wrote. I'm not claiming to be a good skier. If you look at the specific text I was responding to "Mckenna Brown is a pro skier with great style not just some thot" my point was that shes not a pro. The biggest trick she threw in her superunkown was a safety 5. If that makes someone a pro then I shoulda been gettin paid when I was 13. Her being a pro is part of what would've lent her some legitimacy in chiming in on what Hornbeck said, otherwise who gives a fuck right? My point this whole time has been that she and her friend have no legitimacy in what they're saying. They dont know much of anything and that's obvious to me but apparently not to other more sensitive folks. And no being offended by something doesn't legitimize your argument. Shes the one who needs to clarify why shes offended by something so obvious and common sense. All I've heard from the people that disagree with me are a bunch of hypothetical scenarios where someone quits skiing because Mike Hornbeck said pizzaing in the park looks bad. IT DOES. It's a statement of fact. Get over it

Pizzaing between rails looks wack even if needed. If it’s what yah gotta do yah gotta do it. I’m not gonna go out of my way to shit on someone for pizzaing between features. Does it look unnatural/unsmooth yeah. As to Mckennas opinion yeah what ever I can see how it could be taken as gate keeping. Mikes right tho how can you be a true key great park skier if you can’t fuckin turn or slow down

ok can somebody please clear this up, when he says snowplow does he mean pizza or the motion of skate stopping(doing a shifty). because when I'm hitting something and i need to cut speed but there isn't much room how am I expected to lay down some sick carves, no of course im gonna do a little skate stop to cut speed rq

With an adult it is easier to teach a hockey stop.

With kids I always go with wedge but cater to the student. I have definitely had a hour lesson end with parallel

Some people in this thread really don't get that being a "pro" skier has nothing at all to do with what tricks you can do. Maybe 20 years ago, but now there are a million 12 year olds who can dub 12 and no one cares. Being a "pro" skier in this day and age is about how much you put yourself out there and try to work with brands to do something of value to them. If you are not doing that, who cares if you claim on the internet you are better than someone who is. Sure, Mckenna is probably not getting a paycheck to ski but I personally really enjoy her style and she gets free skis from ON3P, which is the exact same amount of support that a lot of male skiers that people on this website idolize get. She has every right to share her opinions about skiing

I literally never heard of her until a couple days ago. So no. Shes not a pro. Sounds like shes SPONSORED. Theres a big difference. A lot of those 12 yearolds are SPONSORED too. I would say the same thing about them if they were disrespectful too. Though, at least for them, I couldnt make the argument that I'm a better skier
