What do you guys think about this? I already know everybody on NS is gonna be on Mike Hornbeck’s side but its worth discussing anyway I guess

If he was gatekeeping kids learning to hit rails that’s shitty but it seems like he was talking to more advanced park skiers. Snowplowing is definitely the fastest way to kill your style, even though it was unnecessary to post and has some douchey boomer energy. Like he’s not wrong but who tf asked. I agree with what McKenna/Georgiana are saying but I think they kind of misunderstood the original post too

idk where they decided hornbeck was talking about people learning to ski, i feel like it's pretty clear "up and coming" probably means insta skiers or people just starting to get recognition, you could ask pretty much anyone if they want to watch an am pizza or even worse sw pizza into a rail and the answer is gonna be hell na

I think assuming hornbeck is being malicious with his post in the first place when like 3 comments down he says he isn't trying to be hateful is wack though, like direct that energy at PSIA or something that LITERALLY gatekeeps what skiing can be to beginners, skiing is full of old people like that
 
I get what he’s saying. It does look wack imo but everyone does it subconsciously from time to time.

it may be gate keeping or whatever they are calling it, but also just continue to do it if you already do it and really don’t care about how it looks.

I don’t really understand in that chick making a post about it. It doesn’t really offend any particular gender/person. Clearly she is triggered but it’s way less exhausting to just disagree and move on instead of making everything a ‘thing’.
 
Okay hold the phone a minute. Doxxing people for selling a lightly used beacon is gatekeeping, and don’t get me wrong there is a lot of that and it’s toxic. But I mean he’s not wrong and it’s not like it’s hard to fix. If you can ski into a rail at all you are probably able to French fry instead of pizza so make a modest adjustment, or don’t I guess who cares anyway.
 
So many kids in the park need to ski faster. I'm sorry if that makes me a gatekeeper but it's true.

Learning new tricks skiing slowly is totally fine. What I think is wack is kids who can do some super-de-duper fed on a tiny little tube but won't even blind 2 off a slightly larger tube that is a foot and a half on the ground. These guys can do the most insane tricks, but then they wonder why they don't look steezy like a pro skier when they do them.

It's because they don't ski fast.

My best trick is literally a lip blind 2. I can't spin past 5. I 100% suck at park skiing. But I do ski really fast. Because of that, people compliment me on my "style" all the time. I don't even think my style is good. People are just so used to seeing park skiers ski slow as shit that they mistake me skiing fast for good style.

One of the fastest skiers I have ever seen ski around the mountain was Khai Krepela. He is known for being sick at rails.

A notoriously fast skier is Adam Delorme. He is known for having extremely good style.

Skiing fast is cool. End rant.
 
Lol, if you all ever met Mike and skied with him you'd know he doesn't give a rip about gatekeeping the sport. If he's willing to take laps with me who is absolute trash in the park and is chill about it I doubt he's trying to keep beginners out of the sport. People are reading way to much into this.
 
You're just reaching if you think this is about beginner/younger skiers, this is a direct call out on professional athletes who shouldn't be snow plowing in-between features.

Mckenna Brown is a pro skier with great style not just some thot. The other girl Georgiana I think is just her friend I don’t follow her

Nobody is saying that he has bad style or that snowplowing is actually cool. But I think it’s stupid that you’re not allowed to criticize pros just because they’ve been around longer than you

Guy was clearly pointing out that correct form / execution needs to be more important.

McKenna brown is a complete dumb ass for bringing up his race and age into the discussion, which is completely unrelated.

I guarantee any proper coach / og would agree with mike. Actually any coach / og of any sport would say something like this.

For example in surfing, a lot of the up and comers are learning all these gnarly tricks without having a good bottom turn. (Which is essential to better style and setups for other tricks). If left unchecked these sports become even more consumed of only trying to do the biggest/flashiest trick, with style being pushed to the sideline.

This is not gatekeeping lol. This is an industry legend putting the word out there so others can learn. He isn't shitting on anybody, he isn't being harsh or mean. He is simply spreading the truth and anybody who gets offended by it instead of appreciating the opportunity to learn needs a reality check.

If the park is built correct, snowplow/pizzaing will fuck your speed for the whole line

If the park is built shit, snowplowing is often the only way to save yourself from certain death

If you are hiking a rail, skate towards the rail, then snowplow on the way in, the clip dont count

Yeah I’ve been following her on ig and thought she had style, but I realized from this she only has a few tricks that look good.

I mean regardless of gender I don’t see how mediocre flat box slide to switch makes it in this kind of production?

I’m not saying I’m better at all, but I’ve been skiing a year and could see myself getting to that level after this or the season after.

I think younger pros should be able to have a voice and disagree with og’s. But I don’t see how this girl could be considered a “professional” especially since she’s probably grown up skiing.

Shes not a pro. she made a superunkown which is a competition for unknown skiers. OP is just talking out of his ass and doesn't know the difference between an influencer and a professional athlete. And I've just been mocking him. unfortunately a lot of influencer chicks get a big head when they get a lot of followers or, in this case, Level 1 gives you a participation trophy. There are plenty of legit women who are way better than me or rasta lab and those ladies are usually smart enough to know the sport they love wouldn't even exist without the OGs (except for Devin Logan). Talk all the shit you want if pros are making boomer political posts but when a style master like Mike Hornbeck is giving advice on style just shut up and listen.

Ok first of all I get Mikes side but I guess it wasn’t worded properly but he did explain it afterwards . I’m sorry but mckennas has a point ! This is what is so exhausting "i could do this better than her or with more style " can we stop comparing ourselves to others disregard the sex , the age, the skills . Can we just let people have fun ski the way want ppl go in the park to have fun and to improve or to try new things. Mckenna on the other hand spoke heavily against it even to the point of bringing mikes age, gender and race.

The only reason anyone on here is comparing skill to McKenna, is to bring out how ridiculous it is that someone on her level has the audacity to put out such a shit response to an actual og that knows what he’s talking about.

proper snowplow is beyond the skill level of a lot of park skiers. there are some toddlers out there with a proper wedge that are legit better skiers than a lot of people in the park

I don’t see it as bringing others down to claim snowplowing is ugly, because it is. Just like how it’s not bringing others down to say that flailing your arms and locking your knees isn’t good for style.

If it’s fixated on one person and you’re scrutinizing them instead of genuinely trying to helpfully critique…. that’s when I think when I think someone is being put down.

He recognises that he has an influence on the style other skiers ski with and it's a way to greatly improve the style you ski with to cut out snow plows.

It's advice to people looking to improve their skiing.

Could he have softened how he gave that advice, maybe, should he have to, no.

For a composed freeskier a snow plow should become a last resort.
