watching SNL right now and this has got to be the worst band ever! i can't even begin to describe how bad this performance is. bahahaha who the hell are these crackheads? soooooooooooooooooo bad....the bitch was dancing around with ribbons just a second ago...anyone else see this? my chest is killing me right now from laughing so hard

well Gnartron, a lot of people watch SLN and it is Saturday night so figured other people who saw their performance would agree that it was flat out retarded

naw it was just bad and hilarious at the same time...funniest part of the whole show no doubt...i was highly entertained/think i ruptured me spleen from laughing so hard

first of all theres no "bad" band out there..everyone has their taste. but there are def bands out there that have better skillz in composition, musicianship, etc. and arcade fire makes some quality music. even if you dont like it, you cant say its bad music because well technically its not. you just look like an idiot when u come out and say its hilarious and retarded...

maybe they are a good band and make great music, but judging by their performance on SNL, the assumption would be that they suck dick...i've never heard them before so this was the first time i heard any music coming from them, and it just sounded bad

yeah, don't make a hate thread when you don't even know who you're talking about. Don't assume anything, and keep your opinions to yourself unless you have something to say that you can back up

they are a great band and make great music. the 2 songs they played tonight, which i thought were very good, are from their new album which is phenomenal - not a bad song on the whole album. so PLEASE before you go make a thread about something that you have no idea what you're talking about, do a little research first or else just shut the fuck up

I agree- a bunch of emo ass hipsters playing the violin with hitler youth haircuts

how the fuck do these retards get signed- id rather listen to Jbiebs than that shit

Each to their own, but this "emo ass hipster band" put out one the best albums this year imo. Their SNL performance wasn't great, but they've been amazing live...one of the headliners at Coachella 2011 actually!

WHATTTTTTTTTTTT. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU NOT LIKE ARCADE FIRE? FUCK. This is unacceptable. Someone please renew my faith in NSG's taste in music.

actually.. its quite accurate. hitler and hitler youth is often depicted with a haircut resembling the one that the dude in the front has. in addition, the vintage looking vest with suspenders, more suspenders, plus the wispy mustache on the guy in the back left suggest hipster roots. finally, the excess eyeliner and black bring about an emo look to the band. seriously, i feel like i could see these exact people if i walked into a fucking urban outfitters.

It was the arcade fire. I actually used to like some of there music. Saw them on one of the late nights a couple months ago, it was straight terrible. Saw it listed on snl and said no thank you. I don't even watch snl most of the time anyway

Are you honestly going to defend this performance right here? Skip to the ribbon dancing at 4:20 and try and tell me that didn't look retarded. Maybe the band doesn't suck but this performance certainly did.

voice of reason, thats why music and art critics in general are so funny to me. Its a completely subjective matter that is evaluated on an individual level. There are 3 common musical phases or listening planes. Sensual, Emotional, and musical/technical. Maybe you can say one band isn't as technical as another or something along those lines, but you can't say that the technical plane is better or more important than the sensual phase. So if someone simply 'likes' the music it means it is just as good as your choice.

Everyone needs to do and listen to what they want.

Just because music preferences are personal and subjective, that doesn't mean that there isn't value in critiquing and/or expressing your thoughts on WHY you do or don't like something. There are plenty of bands that fail on all three levels you mentioned...yes, of course individuals may disagree to that effect, but I think there are definitely some solid criteria to consider when evaluating music.
It is absolutely possible to evaluate music in a fairly objective manner...I can appreciate the worth/value in music, a song, or a particular band, even if they don't speak to me or my tastes personally. A person's thoughts on why a band is not particularly "good" can be pretty compelling if you ask me. But, you didn't I know.
