Slash Abuse.

Has the slash gone too far? Personally, I think they make me feel like fucking john john florence out there on the slopes and who doesn't love a little whip to the face from thrown up snow or even the illusive windshield goggle wipe.

BUT

Ski companies, ski resorts, and average skiers like me have beat the slash to a fucking pulp.

The trend towards flexier skis has lead ski companies (Faction, Line, Armada) to feature slash, after slash, after slash in their videos. At first, it was amusing, but when slashes are getting thrown in after every trick or every pow follow it gets OLD.

It's almost like they told the athletes to hop around like little energizer bunnies, no no no don't just do the trick ya gotta be WORKING that snow baby!

offenders throughout the edit but 1:47 is a good example.

I like sammy's slashes but come onnnnn son, it's too much. We get it, the whitewalker is PLAYFUL.

Example resorts absolutely milking slash content. ZOMG the skiing is so good look at our local pro in a fucking trench!

(nothing against any of the riders featured above, just needed some examples)

The slash used to be something that was pulled out for SPECIAL occasions. Deep snow, pillows, interesting terrain features.

The most messed up part is it's not just the ski industry. Everyone and their mom are trying to slash for the camera now, the driving factor being clout. ZOMG the snow was so good!!! Shoulda been there today fuckerr! LOOK at that snow I just threw up, wow, so deep, very euphoric, much ecstasy.

I for one have reconsidered my usage of the slash. Like I said in the introduction I love slashing and am for sure guilty of trying to make conditions look UNREAL for the camera. It's also a little half-trick that you can really do in any type of snow, a sort-of hockey stop. BUT I think it's disgusting how the slash is being used now to promote skis/resorts/social status.

What do the PEOPLE think about this.... is there such a thing as tasteful slashing? What about the hopping sideways pow turn? Is this just a massive trend that will fade away? Do you even care, bro?

Yeah now that you point it out the slash has become very prevalent now in a lot of media, especially resort promotions. And the main point of it being in those is to make the conditions look deeper than they are I think. Personally, I don’t consider snow in my face because I slashed a faceshot, because it just seems silly to act like 3 inches of fresh is super deep.

Im not reconsidering my use of the slash, because at the end of the day it’s just another type of turn. A useful way to dump some speed while looking kind of stylish

Washed up pro skiers trying to milk one more edit out of their shot knees before the new kids start receiving vid gigs.

I mean they are fun to do when ripping down but ya you make a good point I think they reaching a saturation point in the wider media and honestly i usually would rather a diff clip in an edit regardless of how fun they are

I partially blame STE for this, for years a disproportionate amount of their content was slash photos made to make the snow look really deep. Just too easy of a marketing material cash cow IMO, all you need is like one patch of 6-8" fresh snow to get a banger slash shot

The only time I really like a good slash is in the spring when you can throw a giant wave of corn snow off the side of a cat track.

Slash has got to be one of the most stylish ways to dump speed so I think we will continue to see it for a long time. Good point on JJF, makes u feel like you are railing a massive turn out at pipe

Need the tgr forum perspective in here. Do you die a little inside everytime you see some candy ass egregiously dumping speed when they should be weight forward throwing in a railroad track?

Either it means that hauling ass isn’t really their style and they’re more about jibbing around and hitting every side hit, or they’re just not comfortable with speed yet. I don’t think a ton of people dump a lot of speed just to look cool and slashy. The main problem with slashes is the media

yeah, like i was getting the snow up to my waist or so yesterday, even though there was not even a dusting, and it was icy as hell. in some spots where there's loose snow you can just get it, i know what u mean

Didn't know slashing was a thing. I honestly thought this was about Guns N Roses..

But yea looks like one of those noob "tricks" that people new to skiing would try for instagram.

The popularity of slashes is because they're fun and a great marketing tool for mountains to make the snow look deep. Agreed its an issue because they're stock and the go to. Would much rather see different varieties of turns dictated by the terrain. Continuing with the surfing analogy, its ugly if a surfer is just pumping down the line for an air or doing the same cutback 5 times. Gotta have the variety and surf/ski what the line is asking for you to. Harmonious

You should probably stay away from the shoulder at Alta... And burn any ski magazine you have ever looked at.
