Skins?

Ok so I've never skinned before and don't know too much about it, but i'm about to get my first pair. I heard that you can do shaped or straight skins, and that shaped give you more grip, but straight are easier to deal with. what do you reccomend?

get some skins that are as wide as the widest part of your ski and cut them so they are the shape of your ski.

youll have more luck at tgr with this kind of thing. as said above get skins that are as wide as the widest part of your ski and then trim them. most skins come with a trimmer and instructions or you can google how to trim skins.

kind of unrelated - BUT - my friend was telling me about a pari of tele skis that have scales on them (like cross country skis), so you don't need skins to climb. Sounds pretty cool to me, I'd like to try them.

Eh, you don't really have to go that wide. I just get them to fit my tails, since that's where most of the weight is anyway. You don't climb with the tips of your skis.
It sounds to me like you have quite a bit of research to do yet. If you have specific questions I can try to answer them, but this is pretty general for any kind of a straight answer.

I do the same when I skin up, although I have to say I always will hike given the choice. Obviously, this is not an option in most circumstances.
If you have narrow skis the amount of coverage becomes more of an issue, but otherwise on wide powder skis nowadays is less of an issue. I would go for whatever is most convenient to attach to the skis, unless you think you need more friction when climbing.
Hope this helps a little but definitely use TGR.

I recommend the Black Diamond Ascension STS nylon skins. Everyone I know that tours, inlcuding myself, uses them. The STS system works with any tip (even big ass fat hellbents). They work like they're supposed to.

Any skin you get you will end up trimming to get it to fit your specific skis.

and get pretty close to as wide as the widest part of your ski. If your skis are something like 135 - 105 - 128 I would go for skins that are 130.

and also, you def. don't need the skins to fix perfectly. But obviously the more skin that covers the ski the more base area it will have to grab. If I were buying skins new like you i'd get them so it fit everywhere on the ski, tip and tail.

Also when you get your skins, i'd tie a little piece of string around the tail clip and tie it to the tail of the skins. The tail clips suck and usually come off of the skins and you have to buy new ones. So if you do this it saves you some hassle.

DON'T GET THEM!!!!!

they are for people who don't ski much and won't use wax

if you use wax on them it's impossible to scrape out of the scales, granted they're supposed to be wax free, but wax just works so much better than scales.

they really aren't anything special
