Skins without touring bindings

I'm guessing you're planning on going without trekkers too. If this is the case, all you could really do is say you have a set of skins and be $130 closer to being broke. Skinning with your heel locked down is about like walking without moving your ankle, it doesn't work. If you just want to kind of get into the backcountry, buy someone's old used set of skis and skins to see if you like it. This would be infinitely more enjoyable than trying to shuffle for 2,000' vert.

I'd take bootpacking over that any day. Without having your heel free, you can really only take about 4-6" steps, and you can't go up anything remotely steep. You can find a used set of Trekkers for around $100 to make things a lot easier, but skinning with a locked heel just doesn't work.
