Skins too skinny?

Hey yall,

I currently have a pair of newish skins cut to fit a pair of 90mm skis, how bad would it be to try and use them on a 98mm ski? are they too skinny? Am I gonna be moon-walking up the steeps? I have crampons for my dynafits, so I'm not really worried about it that much. Just curious if anyone has experience with this, because I don't want to pay 150 for new skins.

which model skins are they, which skis were they originally cut for, and which skis do you have now?

In any case, you're probably gonna be fine, especially if you've got 'pons for your bindings.

They were g3 alpinist skins, 110mm cut to fit. Old skis are 119-90-105, new skis are gonna be wrenegade 98's so 129-98-119.

yeah imo you'll be fine. I used a buddies skins on a pair of 95mm skis that were definitely more than 10mm narrower and they did fine.

You might notice it if you're setting a traverse in firm snow, because that's when only the outside of your ski making contact. In those situations, having narrow skins is a pain since you need to roll your ankles downhill to get traction. It will be totally fine for easy skin tracks, side country, well traveled areas and such, but If you are trying to do some long, adventurous tours or you are getting into more serious terrain, it may behoove you to optimize your gear.
