Skiings answer to Art of Flight

Growing up as a snowboarder nothing was more inspiring to me than Travis Rice’s Art of Flight. It is still so inspiring to me as a skier. The scale of the lines they pick the consistently huge airs and awesome rotations with sketchy landings still blow me away. There have obviously been segments of ski films and certain skiers that match the intensity of Rice and crew, but I have not come across a film that can stand head to head with Art of Flight. Every film has that banger shot or awe-inspiring segment, but Art of Flight is so jam packed with so many incredible shots. What do you guys think? Is there a ski film that can compete or that is better?

Also, side note, I was pretty dissappinted with Fourth Phase btw. Being a four year project I was expecting so much more, but its seemed just like a bunch of excuses and “it would be cool if...”. That being said I am not some pysco Travis Rice superfan, I just think Art of Flight is the best snowsports film to date.

Supervention was pretty great. I agree there hasn't been anything close to a skiing version of AoF though. I think there needs to be more collab films with skiers and boarders. I think there's few things cooler than skiers and boarders ripping down the same line and hitting the same features. A recent example is Benchetler's chasing advanture (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNs68O5JSKg) starting at the 15:30 mark.

Watch numinous, its very well done. Not as many tricks but some of the most insane bc lines and amazing filming.

i think there are skiers who are better at tricks than t rice, and skiers that shred bigger lines than t rice, but not many that approach his all around skill

i think candide, parker white, and sammy carlson together could put something out at his level

art of flight was considerably worse than that's it that's all, AOF really pissed me off how such experienced people can make such poor descisions. teddybear crisis is in contention, HUGE jumps, but it's 12 years old, so the level of tricks was crazy for it's time but not the same as what people are doing now. not a ton in the big lines department though. the free segments Mr Thovex put out "Candide Kamera" were pretty epic too, but not whole movies, just long segments of candide doing his thing on whatever terrain is in front of him. Candide is an even crazier but less marketable version of t rice.

Plus they did'nt have a Red Bull budget and Numinous was still in sane. I also thought the Fourth Phase was sick.

i though the art of flight was crap especially considering the budget. Travis rice is one of the best snowboarders ever but he sounds like a fucking idiot blowing his load into the camera the entire film. No movie will ever top claim imo!

Also tanner is somehow still up there

If I become super rich I promise y'all I'll hand those 4 a huge travel budget and a garbage bag of weed and say okay guys go git it

Definitely agree with this. There are a lot of films that are on par with AOF for a segment or have one skier who matches their scale, but a solid crew like mentioned def would have the ability to produce something equal or better to AOF

Thanks for all the great responses. Would def agree with all of you to some degree or another (except all the AOF haters, ya'll tripping). If you want to talk disappointment and waste of budget thats Fourth Phase. Thats it That's All is also fantastic, and since it came first I can see how you might think that its better. Totally agree on getting Candide, Sammy, and gang together for a full film! I love Few Words, but its more of biographical doc than a "Ski-Film". A Rice and Thovex collab would be sick too!!!

If skiing puts its best freeride minds together...tanner hall, samm c, candide, sage, lot of the TGR crew, big picture, etc and just went all in on something could easily put something together like that. T Rices all around skill level is absolutely insane how he shreds big mtns

All the brain farm movies were top notch but that’s it that’s all changed my life. It came out my sophmore year and I watched it several times a week that season and eventually realized what I wanted to do with my future

Haven't seen it yet but looking forward to it! Faction team absolutely rips!

With a larger budget, the faction team could produce a brain farm esque flick featuring a core group including Candide, delhorme, duncan Adams, sam anthamatten, johnny collinson

its a shame that BF broke up and yes thats the reason that the fourth phase isn’t all that great compared to their previous flicks. We are blood was amazing... totally watchable and entertaining even for non skaters if you haven seen it. And JohnJohn florence biography surf movie blue moon was sick too. Maybe we should propose an idea to Curt— he likely will recover from his mistakes and continue to be one of the best Producer/Cinematographer/ Director guys in the industry

Would absolutely love to see Faction make a full length feature, Salt the Grease with Duncan Adams always makes me feel some sort of way.

Somewhat related to the OP, Torstein Horgmos Horgasm is my go-to snowboarding movie. Plenty of street segments, Backcountry and partying. Always gets me pumped for winter.

It’s big mountain, but La Liste has my vote for just jaw dropping skiing and cinematography to go against Art of Flight.

AOF is the best and when your launching a brand new full blown media platform at the time (RED BULL MEDIA HOUSE big push into the world) its going to be the best when its back by over a 10MM budget, now remember kids, not all that 10MM was in production, but the reason everyone knows about that film, skier, snowboarder, and every human across the board, is because they SPENT the money to market it as much if not more than what they spent to make it.

La Liste was insane. Some of the best skiing I have ever seen.

Do you know who was operating the drone? It was easily the best drone work ever done in skiing.

Its in the credits, its a couple dudes.

This is a direct quote from Travis Rice's instagram..."Thank you @banffmountainfestival! What an honor to present with so many inspired works in film and literature! The 2 standouts I was able to watch was NUMINOUS by @kyepetersen, which... my God, maybe the best riding ever...? Also INTO TWIN GALAXYS with @eboomer and his crew, psycho expedition across Greenland trying to kayak a glacial river.!"

So while we are never going to pretend our modest budget film Numinous is the multi million dollar epic that is Art of Flight, the man himself seems to think the riding in ours is perhaps at or exceeding. Pretty high praise! The best skiing of the year is in Numinous, without any shadow of the doubt. Watch it here..https://vimeo.com/ondemand/numinoushd

Drone filming was primarily done by Chris Flynn of Flynn Media with additional work by Jamie Tanner (he does a lot of stuff for Seeking Nirvana) as well as Andre Nutini (who has done a lot of stuff for Legs of Steel in the past). All BC locals.

Definitely should get Kurt and Rice to talk with some of the Faction guys. I think a colab between these guys, skiers and boarders together, could truly set a new bar.

I think Sean Pettit needs to be on this list. Super underrated on NS but that dude absolutely rips.

Oh yeah shit I blew it, I also forgot kye, ian mac, and sage. Also hoji if he's still skiing like he was last time I watched him

Yes totally! He also rips on a board too! He could be the bridge between the boarders and skiers in this theoretical snowsports bonanza.

Side note, when I read Sean Petit, for some reason I imagined Sean Penn instead at first. I had an image of Sean Penn and kitted out in his old man hipster garb shredding some gnarly pillow line hahahaha...

Few Words

This, but it still can't compare...AoF had, oh, about 40 more helis in the film than Few Words.

If a ski film doesn't have about 30mins of the film just devoted to flying around in a chopper, then it's not going to touch art of flight.

Just imagine some of the all time greats in big mtn skiing (i.e Sage) coming together to make a film with some of the all time greats in big mtn snowboarding (i.e Travis) + Curt Morgan directing would be fucking groundbreaking.
