Skiing with no helmet

yea i wear my helmet most of the time, but when i'm just fucking around i dont..... they are a good idea

well yes, a helmet is not always going to provide enough protection, especially with extremely high impact crashes, but thats not a viable argument not to wear one. not only can helmets mean the difference between getting a concussion and just being a bit sore, but if you fall onto a sharp object your head will be given protection from it. compared to other safety gear, helmets are extremely low profile, they weigh almost nothing and do not restrict movement at all. There is no reason not to wear one.

This is absolutely incorrect. You are far safer with a helmet than without one. Most of the head injuries which cause death might not be saved with a helmet, but many concussions can be avoided. By any intelligent analysis you are much safer with one on your head.

Just because you wear a helmet does not mean you are SAFE, if that is what you meant, then I agree. Bad things can still happen, but to say that wearing a helmet does not make you any safer than not wearing one is just stupid.

I never ski without one, there is nothing to gain.

Uh... no?

Wearing a helmet protects your head from sharp impacts. While it wont save the rest of your body, I'd rater take a baseball bat swing to any of my arms, legs or torso rather than to the head. Your chest and muscles can absorb impacts pretty well, but your brain just kinda sloshes and slaps around inside your head if it gets hit. Not good.

"just because you have a helmet on doesn't mean you're really any safer"

I could really never hope to find a single doctor or EMT that would agree with this statement. Wearing a helmet will increase your chances of surviving and injury you take to the head. It rarely will actually be better for you to not have one on (instances of whiplash are a rare exception, and the benefits far outweigh the risks when it comes to wearing one). Obviously, there are some injuries that you can incur where no helmet will save your life (like falling out of a plane without a parachute), but a helmet will pretty much always increase your threshold for survival. Head injuries are the leading cause of death when it comes to action sports, so please, wear a fucking helmet.

I only wear a helmet when Im skiing shit with trees, rocks, or in the park....which is basically 99% of all my skiing. The only time i dont wear a helmet is at my home hill at Sundown where im hittin the groomers.

obviously a helmet won't make you invincible. i wore one and still got a mild concussion but it would've been much worse without it. That and taking a ski, edge-first, into the dome definitely would've been a far worse experience without my helmet. also, it's very warm .

yea...falling out of a plane without a helmet on isn't much different, but a helmet can the the difference between:

death and a major concussion

major concussion or a minor concussion

cracked skull or a concussion

twenty stiches or a scrape on some plastic

minor concussion or a headache

headache or a wow that was sketchy

yup, helmets sure are pointless

I agree, I hate people who cite all this random shit to 'disprove' the fact that helmets work. Someone I know always did that and it was very annoying.

i donno, im buying a hat from uni threads to wear next year. so i think im gonna were a helmat when im gonna try something crazy, and a hat otherwise.

brang them both.

oh and i did a handrail last year (with a helmet) and allmost had to be taken off on a stretcher. i laid their for about 20 min before going to the lodge and not being able to eat because my head was throbing and i felt like i was gonna puke. So ya helmets are steez!

I'm sure your dinner party was lovely but this is just a false statement and I don't want anyone to believe you.

-Most skiing/boarding helmets weigh like 15oz-30oz at most. That is incredibly light for the protection they provide.

-If you are talking about road biking helmets they are like 9oz to 15oz that's like saying long hair will cause more damage to your spine. It is just absurd not to wear something that light that could also save your life on pavement.

-Therefore, I am assuming they were referring to downhill mtn biking, and downhill racers are dealin with some gnar elements at killer speeds, thats why they basically use beefier Mx helmets. That's why many AK skiers use Mx style helmets as well.

-Mx helmets weigh roughly 3-5 lbs, so I could see the potential whiplash effect the weight might have on the spine, but in DH Mtn Biking or Mx the lifesaving benefits outweigh the risks.

-Your point doesn't apply to the new lightweight helmets most kids wear, so don't try to scare them into thinking helmets will injure them cuz you don't want to give up your Roxy beanie.

I started wearing helmets at age six. I've worn a helmet almost every ski day since then. And I get scared virtually every day on the slopes. Seems pretty hard to progress without scaring yourself.

Word. I started wearing a helmet early on, never stopped. If the only reason to not wear a helmet is to look cooler, then you need to think about your approach to skiing a little bit.

Don't you know? The point of skiing is not BEING good, it's LOOKING good! Joking, lol

Seriously, with helmets like Bad Lieutenant and other good looking models, no longer an excuse not to wear one. Sure sometimes its more harm than good but this is perhaps .011% of the time.

Regards,

I usually dont wear one even though its pretty dam stupid... well at least that what my dad says. hahah And any scars that I have recieved so far are from ice burn, ski tips hitting my face, but no head injuries so far thank god.

i never used to wear a helmet but next year will have it in the park and for freeriding. My bro 'Rastafarider' got caught in an avy a week or so ago, got thrown over a cliff and had he not been wearing his helmet he would have been dead.

For me it would take hearing something like that to make me wear one.

Word, the skate style helmets are ill. The Giro Encore is like 20oz.

I think I'm gonna score a Smith Holt nxt yr. Optional skull-candy inserts and you can use it skating in sum as well. The reviews I've read from people who've had Giro/Red helmets before seemed to favor the lightweight and comfort of the Holt

I don't, i probably should and it is a good idea but I never have and I just don't I don't even think about it and if I get scared it not no helmet but the line

haha, so ture. It is by far the sickest looking helmet ever made, but then you get it and it's the size of a small island nation... then instead of looking cool, you look like you have a volkswagon on your head.

dude, fuck you. Im tired of this shit. who cares if theres already a thread. at least he's not asking how to do a 360. Maybe he just wants to have the discussion again. Dont disgrace NS with posts like that.

i wore my helmet every one of the ten days i seshed this year. so one of the days it was pretty fuckin warm, so i go to my car, spark a bowl, and ditch some layers and my helmet. i'm back in the park and within 15 minutes of my only helmetless skiing of the season i undershoot a gap jump trying a 720, my feet catch on the top of the landing and i slam my head quite nicely. i remember one of the first things i thought after the fall was "good thing i was wearing my helmet" or some shit, i then touched my head and remembered that i wasn't wearing one.

never take it off, unless its spring skiing at mt.spokane(fricken 45 degrees!)people never used 2 wear them, but ive always worn 1 my whole life.plus,my giro "bad lieutenant" is 2 sick not 2 wear

i ski with a helmet all the time for me it gives me less to worry about on rails and big jumps. plus ive seen friends go down and if they didnt have helmets on they would have been seriously screwed up.

I always wear a helmet while skiing, no matter what. One day I forgot mine at home and just wore a beanie and I felt naked skiing without one. Also I got tuneups in my giro helmet so that encourages me to wear it.

I just started skiing with a helmet this year, I was never scared with out one, and the best use for it now is keeping branches hitting your head when your skiing the woods and in the park
