Skiing the steeps

Okay, I went skiing this weekend and i skied powder bowl, this bowl thats hella steep. anyway i fell and kept going! i was headed right for a cliff i was sliding on my back and since it was so steep i couldn't stop myself! it was crazy. it happended twice that day. anyone got any advice on how to stop myself if i get in another situation like that?

uh i duno man. maybe learn how to ski powder. usually you dont slide that mach in powder as apposed to hardpack cuz its slows you down.

new look zrs race bindings for sale, din 7-17, $225 US, send me a msg if u want um

Yah he's right you don't normally slide like that in powder. Was it just a small pow dump with sheet ice below, then I could understand you sliding down the hill.

when that happens you have to try and get your feet downhill, once you get into a position with your feet downhill your good.

Yeah man...if you are on your back, try spreading your arms out...up the hill, and down the hill. That way, you can flip yourself to get your skis back in front of you. Dig em in and try to slow down or get up. That has happened to me before. I jumped of a cornice on a REALLY steep slope. Instead of gripping, I just slid and fell over. Fortunately, I kept my skis below me, slid for about 20 feet, and managed to stand up and make that first turn.

We'll have you dead pretty soon.

If your carrying an ice axe, you can use the classical self arrest technique. Easy to do in the backcountry, I always carry one when in the steeps in the outback.

If not... your fucked, unless you can get your skiis downhill and somehow stop anyways- or theres flatter to stop.

if its past your technical ability and your putting yourself in danger than don't do it, work on your pow skiing on less intense runs, i hate how people go on runs that are way past their ability just to say that they did it

what kind of fag carrys an ice axe, wow thats probably one of the gayesst things ive ever heard

HEY GO HIT THOSE ROCKS TOGETHER AND TRY AND MAKE FIRE

What kind of fag has no idea what an ice axe is for?

some wigger parkrat, who cant turn, and just hits jumps all day.. never touched the backcountry.

an iceaxe has variable uses, and can save your life.

we don't have any powder at my mountain, but yea get a hold of that and get back to me

oh and don't forget to wipe properly

First of all you cocksucking, ass grabbing, deep throater, im not a 'wigger park rat' I am an experienced back country skier that has never in my life come across, or heard of any one that skis with an ice axe unless they are mountaineering, and if your falling out of countrol how does a fag tag like yourself, manage to grab an ice axe so you a can execute a 'classical self arrest' i have so advice, take that ice axe and go kill your worthless ass self with it, the world will be a better place

HEY GO HIT THOSE ROCKS TOGETHER AND TRY AND MAKE FIRE

ya man unless that ice axe was in your hand when u started falling htere would be no way to get it intime for it to provide any help, like wut? do u except to be rolling down a mountin, stop. grab your ice axe attached to your backpack, start rolling again then use the 'clasical self arrest' to stop yourself from falling

haha...that's one angry msg u crazy mofo...

:)

but if someone is carrying an axe there's no way ur gonna be able to whip it out batman style and do a self arrest if u really are about to slide off a cliff....(depending on a far the edge is)

and yeah, i don't know of anyone who skis with an axe unless ur doing some mountaineering

you could rig your ice axe up desperado style and have it slide out on a track from your forearm and open up and make a cool noise

Abba Zabba, you my only friend

ice axe is the new bandana.. you have to tie it to your pants and let it hang. you guys are so lame for not knowing

heres some advice: POWDER BOWL ISNT STEEP!! christ... straight run it, make super g turns, something... striahgt run would be intense... but still. youre from tacoma so i assume you mean crystal and ive skied there my whole life. learn to not eat shit by sticking to lucky shot.

You get yourself sliding w/out tumbling (one direction, preferably feet first).. even if your moving quickly you can slow yourself down with it, as you would if simply hiking it in boots.

wow there are some angry people in this forum, im sure none of you have ever considered a hill steep before, maybe this guy is fairly new to steeps and big mountain....

anyways, i would just recomend try to avoid falling by staying confident through your turns and try not to get too far in the backseat(esp in powder) But if you do accidentally go ass-over-tea-kettle try to bring your skis around ASAP, they are the only things that can bring you to a stop. If you are out of control to a point that you cant bring your skis back, than just change your name to aaron mcgovern...

haha, powder bowl, what a joke. they should call it Ice & Crappy snow bowl. and i dont know what your definition of a cliff is, but there arent any cliffs on powder bowl. theres a couple rocks that stick up, but its only about a 1-2 foot drop.

and to answer your question about how to stop on steeper faces, try to pressure your edges of your ski into the snow a little, but not too much so you dont hook your ski and fuck up your knee. or try to roll your upper body over onto your stomach and self arrest by digging the handle of your skipole into the snow.

Powder bowl isn't steep and there are no huge clifs in it. Go ski some more open terrain in green valley or off of Rex if you actually feel like powder bowl is that steep. You just need some more time on steep terrain. Also go try to ski exterminator or bull run, they have a slightly steep pitch but are open enought that you can eat it and be safe as long as you avoid all the trees. Be sure to stay forward and don't get in over your head out there, people are dying like crazy at Crystal this year, 9 and counting...

Also concerning the ice axes. Those angry posts above are gay, people ski with axes all the time and if you know anything about travelling in that type of steep terrain you would have recomended the same thing or the black diamond Whippit self arrest poles. They have an Ice Pick on the end of the grip and they work great.

I have a tendency to get upside-down in chutes with twenty foot airs at the end of them before. Probably because my teneightys tend to wash out on hard landings and sketch straightlines, but the key is using your momentum to roll back so your feet are downhill. Then you can edge your skis, or dig a pole in to stop. Getting your feet back is key though.

have 9 people really died at crystal? i only htink a few people at my slope have EVER died

Yeah,

It been a tough year up there, a couple people ran into each other, a guy skied off a giant cliff, there was a car wreck, and a heat attack, a kid hit a snowmobile, and a guy fell off a chair. There has been some serious work for the patrol this year.
