Skiing Sandy... A West Virginny Trip Report

"No way. I'm not driving 9 hours through a hurricane to ski mank"

^this was the general consensus as Sandy hit the coast. None of us were willing to gamble with a drive like that through areas with no power, heat, gas, etc... Until it passed, that is. Once it was a sure thing and reports were coming in from Canaan Valley that the snow is deep and sexy, we started planning and decided to just call out of work thursday and friday and to make this happen. After all, when would we get to ski a snowicane the first day in November again?

About a dozen of us set out from all over- my ride consisted of 9 hours overnight- I got picked up at around midnight and we drove straight through until we pulled into the Canaan Valler Resort (CVR) lot at 9am. When we got there, everyone was still without power. CVR's lodge was nice enough to rent us rooms for $10 anyways and supply us with extra blankets so we got our rooms set with blinding speed and then convened in the Whitegrass (WG) lodge next door.

Then the magic happened- and oh, was it ever magical.

Day 1 was all hot laps at Whitegrass. Pretty mellow place at first glance, but lots of fun zones hidden around the map for sure. Untouched and wind protected trees, wide-open meadows, you name it- it's all there, and the lodge is so laid back that nobody bats an eye when the ball jar of moonshine gets passed around and everyone chipped in food, beer and shnacks to just make one big buffet. Pretty much the coolest place ever. Also the place is simply unlocked, with a jar and a note that said they are operating on donations only. Oh yeah, and the snow was good. Damn good.

*sorry in advance for the different quality pics, they were collected from many different sources.

At the end of day 1, we retired to the lodge for beers and another "All of everyone's food made into something big for everyone" feast and recap of the day's stoke. Moonshine was chugged. High-fives were shared. Safety meetings were had. A cooler, more laid ack lodge simply does not exist.

While we were hanging out, the guy who runs whitegrass said outr hotel called and were being evacuated from our rooms. We thought he was joking. He was not. We got evacuated and reshuffled into a cabin- all of us- where we could at least make a fire and dry our skins on the ceiling fan. Not bad for $10 a person though, I must say! That and 3 FEMA meals a day was pretty damn good! (the hotel was also set up as a local aid location, but all guests were encouraged to eat the food and not let it go to waste) Still no heat or power, but whatever. Who cares about things like that when there's skiing to be done!?

Day 2: Headed next door to Timberline, which is a legit resort with lifts and stuff- but it was obviously closed except for the few employees who came in to enjoy the heat in the lodge. T-line is much steeper (but still not wildly steep or anything) so it was a little more fun- that and the skin track was far more efficient so we were able to squeeze out a few extra laps before we headed back home.

Yours truly again:

And then we hit the road, fully stoked and wishing it could have lasted longer. Alas, we got the goods while we could. Hoped you guys and girls enjoyed this little trip report and you all have an awesome season.

Thanks but no thanks. Just trying to get some snow love and stoke flowing out there. Summer on NS is brutal but it's time for the fun to start.

Maybe someday I'll get my shit together and start submitting articles, but today is honestly not that day haha

Oh! And there's a pretty nice POV floating around somewhere too... I'll have to find it and get a link in here. Wouldn't be a TR without pov, right?

Haha good to see Whitegrass getting some much deserved props. Glad yall made it safe. Chip Chase on NS...never thought I'd see the day. Where Chips kids around? Those boys rip on xc shit like crazy. Three-pin frontflips!

You're right Matt, my strong dislike for you turned into hate. No, that's not the right use of word... I don't hate you... but your life and your recent shenanigans. I just have to remind myself that I am responsible for my own lack of skiing..... doesn't make it any better though.... and you SHOULD have make it a news article, it would have been great and you could have even more snowless NSers get jealous!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! I want skiing.

Ah sick man! Didn't know you went! Long trips for snow are usually the most rewarding

I did not meet Chip's kids, but kept hearing that they send shit in ways UPS could only dream of haha

Chip is the man. I freakin' love that guy.

It's stuff like this (TR's and what not) that would make the new 'news' on the front page good though. Sure, on TGR the TR's go in the forum, but the new front page (as far as 'news' goes) can be used for stoke. It would have taken just as much time to make a 'news article' (just a blog entry pretty much, how they have it set up) as it did this thread, and it would be super rad to have this kind of stuff there instead of some of the random stuff that has been posted up.

I do believe the front page 'news' could be something rad, but it won't be shit if the mentality of the users is "thanks, but no thanks". Not trying to sound like a dick, just trying to change the mentality of it all.

Well honestly I didn't know anything about the news section of NS until Bishop mentioned it and I looked into it. When I first made that comment I was talking about actual articles, like to BC magazine and shit.

Next time I put one together I'll make it as an NS news article. I'm used to TGR's style of TR sharing and had never realized all the news was NSer submitted.

Looks fucking awesome Huck, nice little TR there. I'll make it down there one of these years, it's only about 5 or 6 hours from southern PA here. A lot of the storms coming through down here that track south hammers that area in comparison the what we get out of em in southeast PA here.

I've also heard there is decent climbing down there in the summer. And then there's the whitewater in that area too.

Way to get after it man, super jealous.

Dude, definitely go check it out if they get hammered. They're not big mountians, but they're all connected and if you like to poke around there are some really really cool spots around CVR, Whitegrass and Timberline.

Also lots and lots and lots of cool faces that need to get hit right near the road to get into Davis. Driving around was pretty eye opening. VW has got some shit going on for sure.

haha yea well PA ain't exactly the rockies of the east coast either. I've definitely had my eye on WV for a few years now.

Yooooo!

West Virginia is Virginia's Drunk Uncle.

But we love you. I can't wait for Snowshoe to open...
