Skiing needs something new

I’m not sure what exactly my intentions are with this thread but skiing needs something new. It’s starting to feel empty and corporate or just plain. This could just be me losing interest but it really feels like the sport is in a decline.

What skiing needs is something old…:Ski culture. It’s a whole lifestyle, dedication. Love for living life to the fullest…slow down or you’ll miss the forest because of the trees.

I think it's just you to an extent and being human. We naturally get bored with repetition. Skiing is fun, but you'll never catch that dragon. Just enjoy the basic stuff that used to get 10yr old you stoked beyond belief.

Try new stuff:

-Don't set expectations so high. Just enjoy being out in the fresh air and enjoy the scenery. Not all of us can.

-Any day is a good day, even straight ice. Enjoy it.

-Don't stress about being early or late or hitting daily vertical targets, new tricks, etc. Just ski

-In contrast, choose a day or two and try and set a personal daily record for total skiing/vertical. Can be fun occasionally, especially if you're driven by goals.

-Ski blues and greens all day, and just cruise.

-New skiing styles or routes you might not have taken

-Something basic like riding alone/not alone

-With/without music

-Try skiing sober if you don't already

-Fuck around in moguls or trees or places you don't normally frequent. Take different routes every time.

-Carve harder than a Thanksgiving turkey

-Plan a ski trip to a different mountain each year if you can afford it. Always a blast to visit new places.

-Ski on one leg

-Ski backwards all day long

-Refurb and ride retro skis

-Meet new people every day

-Actually talk on the chairlift

-Be a goon

-Tailgate in the parking lots

-Befriend the lifties

-Be spontaneous

-Focus on fundamentals

The loss and slow demise of ski culture, especially ski bum and tailgating surely is sad to see.

If there was any change that skiing needed, I vote to make it affordable to middle class families. It's a rich sport and always has been. Sure low and middle income folks can participate but not unless they go above and beyond to travel or live near a ski hill. This is the sole reason I averaged less than a day a year until I graduated college.

Most of us have felt this boredom you're alluding to. Personally, variety of what I do and continually pushing myself without stressing over it either helps keep that boredom at bay. You're not the best skier in the world (I am) so you can always push yourself a little harder each day.

Edit: I'd rather be skiing slush in the rain than not at all.

High quality post. Thank you for the great reminders and good perspective

I’ve got some shit planned for this szn that is going to be pretty new and unique but I can't promise anything because I honestly don't know if I have the skill to do the things I think of in my head lol. Pray 4 ya boi. And no its not "snowboarder tricks" if thats where u thought I was going with this

ye like i was thinking - bear with me - what if instead of two skis, there was just one! and you faced sideways, like surfing. that could be interesting.

After the park closes at Keystone I would ski switch from like 4-9pm. It was almost more fun than park because I felt like a kid again. I had never actually taken the time to learn how to properly carve and maneuver switch so I got to learn skiing again. Eventually did the full run switch down kindergarten or whatever that long green run is.

Came here to post this lol. Specific core memory was when me and my friends used to do “super slow sundays”, essentially going up to all the boxes and rails at Mach -500 and essentially just seeing who could slide for the longest possible amount of time to the end of the rail. Dumb asf and made try hard park kids lapping pissed but it was probably the most fun thing we ever did. Especially going up and down the up rails and stuff.

So yeah, just stuff like that can really change up ur perspective, just do what’s fun and not what you think you should be enjoying.

Another banger one is trying to come to a dead stop on every rainbow rail, harder than you think but so funny

No it doesn't. Just new snow.

It is shocking how for pro skiing the coverage just gets worse and worse and harder to find even the FIS shit. There used to be an Olympic Channel that showed that weeks pro ski races maybe 3 times a day in the winter but I think its gone. FWT and the like just get no traction. All while skiing is ridiculously popular in general.
