Hey all, I'm a Midwesterner, but spending a year in Athens, GA for grad school. I'm planning on taking a weekend with some classmates sometime over the winter to probably head up to NC skiing and was looking for some input from some locals. Looks like app and sugar are both about 4.5 hrs away and Cataloochee is just under 3 hrs.

I'm just looking for the hill with the most variety and best vibe... and good bars wouldn't hurt either. A decent park would be fun but is less of a priority since I'll probably spend most the time teaching my friends.

So yeah, any opinion on those three areas you've got, or if there are any other good areas to look at please let me know. Thanks!

some of this may sound like repeat from the other threads, but:

app will be your best park spot, i'd say it's a decent place to learn too if you're new at skiing, runs are wide and not too steep. most runs will be shorter too

sugar will have variety but has slow lifts. beech mountain is right next door to sugar, and i prefer beech over sugar slightly for the overall vibe (although i'll admit i haven't been to sugar in a while)

i'd probably start at cat if i were you, probably the most you have to gain from sugar/beech/app is an extra 3 hours in the car. if you're going to go multiple times you could always check out another hill on a return trip

COME HIT OBER GATLINBURG
as much as its a growing mountain, it truly has a great vibe. Its located in southeast tennessee so it is probably the closest, and if you check out our park page on face book...ober gatlinburg freestyle terrain...we are improving a lot in that category.check us out and check the thread im posting in like 2 seconds
