Skiing is a silly sport

and I love it, but lets face it, we are only one step removed from tabogganing. instead of sitting on a slippery piece of wood and plastic we are standing on it.....it is meant to be enjoyed in the same way, as a way to have fun on the snow with your friends....

now take a step back for a second and picture a bunch of tabogganers (or gt'ers if you will) wearing baggy ass tall t's, acting like thugs, making gang signs to the camera and arguing about each others style off of their taboggan jumps. picture big air gt competitions, and people getting all worked up about the judging and what tricks were thrown....

THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE

skiing is nothing. its a fun way to play in the snow on slippery sticks. it is not gangster, or stylish, or thug or anything. remember John Symms powder article, he was trying to convey the same thing with the figure skating comparison

99.9 per cent of the members of this site will never be a pro skier, not to be a downer but that is just how it is....you also wont get hit by lighting or win the lottery. so just take a step back and enjoy skiing for what it is....a fun way to get out in the snow and goof around and stop being so serious about it all, cause in the end.....none of it matters

Yes! I agree. And what's makes this sport so much fun is the ability to act, look, and do whatever you want without the regulation of others. It is the haters that try to regulate or effect others that bring it down. The number one most important thing about skiing is that it's your choice to be skiing, and life is about living and enjoying your choices.

downer.. If skiing was really that simple or easy then all of us would be hucking dub corks and such. Doing some of this next level stuff takes legit talent that not alot of people have even though we all aspire to it

geh you could say that about any sport, basketball is just bouncing a ball into a hoop, hockey is just moving on a slippery objects, soccer is just chasing a ball.

The fact is all these sports develop trends, culture and markets. I see where you're getting at but humans in general are trendy ass mother fuckers, that shit wont change.

I agree. But the same can be said about basically any sport or activity. Soccer is just a round inflated ball that a bunch of dudes try to kick into a net, baseball is just swinging a bat at a ball moving really fast. Its just about being human and finding happiness somehow and most of us on this site find that happiness from skiing. Who knows, maybe if something weird went down a long time ago, we would all be on this site talking about sharpening the runners on our sleds and wearing tall tees while doing it. If you can do whatever makes you happy all the time, (maybe even as a "career") then you're doing something right. Nothing wrong with that imo

sooperyooper and garnia, i completely agree with you. soccer is just kicking an inflatable ball into a net.....but it is really fun to do, and that should be the main objective

I don't know what the fuck you're talking about, skiing is obviously all about who can look the coolest.

Woah there, Ill let you in on a little secret. See well, Im a skinny white boy but when I dress like Im black well I can conceal my 9 better becuase Im thug and all thugs have guns.

yea haha it's a simple concept, up chair lift, down the hill, back up again, like ants on a hill... wait, I think I just described midwest skiing.

nah.
Skiing is a sport, it requires a lot of motor skill and balance. It's a physical activity that to do well requires a lot.
It IS stylish. the way you ski, what you ski, how you like to ski is all based on your personal style. Style is a social construction. style does exist in skiing.
If it were as simple as you are trying to make it, none of the competition or industry would exist to the extent it does.

* although
it is silly, and I see where you were going with it, I just think you over-simplified it.

The only thing thats silly about skiing is the amount of money spent by people to imitate pros.
skiing is not silly.

I thought the main objective of skiing was so instead of Homosexuals hanging around the mens room watching out for people playing footsie in the stall, they could wear their baggy pants that are around their ankle as code that they are gay, and know who to hit on!

baggy pants with a ton of underwear showing == sign that you are gay and want to be bu** f******

Yeah. Its just like football. I know that i wont go to the NFL, but I still play in school and play pickup with my friends. WHO CARES??? Skiing is just for fun.

was afraid of this..
soren kirkegaard was one of the first philosophers with existentialist ideals. briefly explained; everything merely is, it is up to the individual to apply meaning.
would someone have gotten it if i had gone with nietzche, sartre or camus?

im not a thug, and have a similar opinion like you,

but what if people find it fun, to be like their idols? wear baggy stuff and take photos of that?

what if they think it is fun to be a gangster on the slope? could their sense of fun be different than yours? probably. if kids want to become pros they can. in most sports that i do, i want to be very good at.

i think its a dream of everyone to become a pro. lets not destroy teh dream, cuz if u put everything in for becoming a pro then you might as well make it.

for me its fun pushing my limits, trying new tricks. i also like to goof around.

sometimes i act gangsta and cool and i guess everybody has done "the bird" once or twice. its fun.

so imo, let the people do what they want to do. if theyre takin it serious and want to compete, that is probably their sense of fun. if people wear T´s that go to their feet, then why do u care? (not talkin to you (OP) directly) if they think its fun, thats perfectly fine imo.

i think everybody should do whatever the fuck they want to do.

its FREE skiing. tae it serious or dont. your pick.

just a few thoughts.

now get out there and shred, everyone

Unlike Soccer and Baseball, Skiing has a bit of art to it. There's no goal or points. You can do whatever you want on skis, and therefore what you chose to do is an expression of who you are. That's where the tall Ts and gang signs come in. Skiing is a lot more like Dancing or Figure Skating than Soccer or Baseball.

haha I approve of this thread. The only thing I have a problem with is...... you are saying .1% of the people on the site are gonna be pro that aren't? Cuz if you meant that .1% is only pro then that seems a lil low...............idk thoooo just sayinnnn

Bill Hicks once said that life is a ride and that too many people take it seriously. Skiing is alot like life, though i think most skiers actually see their life as "a ride". Sure we wear baggy clothes and flip gang signs, but we are just having fun. We're not taking what we are doing too seriously because, like life, skiing is just a ride. It can be an amazing ride and you can have loads of fun while doing it, but still its just a ride.

Derek, where have you been all my life? well, I just have to say... skiing is a silly sport, and I am very very proud to be one of the silly members of this sport, with all the silly shananagins involved.

'so just go down there and jump off of something!'

What are you saying about tobagganing? I heard Mikey Leblanc put snowboard bindings on a toboggan and it was cool. I take my tobogganing very seriously. And the Symms article was lazy metaphor...not epiphany.

But clearly its really fun to act hyphy and thuggin and shitthats not the problem, its the people who are serious about itlike they are actually gangstasand actually pros
justfeltlikeusingcenter

I like to ski in deep powder snow because it makes me forget about when my daddy beats me. that is all.

You are totally right, I guess you could make skiing as a metaphor for life then.

It's sad to see most people lose that passion to live their life this way.
