Skiing Invention Ideas

Hey Newschoolers

My brother is doing prototyping class next year and he has to do a year long project inventing something. So he decided to do it skiing related. So far he thought he would make magnetic ski poles that stick to your gloves, but we want more ideas.

+k to good ideas

No offense but the amount of weight in magnets it would take to allow the pole to be magnetized to the glow would be way to heavy and uncomfortable to be even considered

Actually a pretty good idea. It would be sick to put a magnet strip in your palm that sticks to the pole. It may not be very strong but it would help during grabs

and this ladies in gentlemen.. is how things are invented! good idea im sure the magnet in the pole grip and glove would overpower the small amount of metal edge.

regarding the weight:

Look into Neodymium magnets, they're ceramic, very strong, and very light. They've been using them for speaker magnets for years to keep the weight down.

ski pole tips with a screw driver bit on the end of each one. maybe an allen key and a phillips. make out of super strong metal. bam. most basic screw drivers are always with you

i think magnets may get annoying considering all the metal you have on you while skiing (zippers, edges, parts of bindings) i think the velcro is a better idea for poles would help greatly with grabs.

Speaking of magnets, what if the main zipper on a coat was a strip of magnet? The Velcro would reinforce the bond and it would be so much easier to "zip up" than zippers. I guess the problem would be keeping it together and having it be waterproof. I just get annoyed whenever I have to zip up my coat with mittens on and I have to end up taking them off to attatch the zipper head to the other set of teeth.

the magnets would be cool. when your riding the lift you can just stick them on the side bar or something and never drop your poles again

Magnets is a nice idea, A simple idea but still a good one would be carrying ski poles over your shoulder, by having the straps attach together quickly, maybe a plastic carabiner, instead of having to put the straps through the buckles. would be easy to do and a HUGE help, free up another hand.

I have a Predatorwear coat that kind of has this, except it also has an actual zipper. It also has a magnet in the hood that keeps it from flying into your face when you land switch.

That would be awesome. The velcro thing for your gloves would have to be interchangeable. And heated

but what happens when you fall and your poles are stuck to your gloves and fuck you over?

Also make a ski with with holes for skins (think K2) but instead of putting skins through the holes you put tie straps that attach somewhere on the top of the ski so when you tighten/ loosen the strap you can alter the rocker to your liking. I know my design sucks at this point but it would be sweet to be able to set your own rocker depending on what you are feeling like.

like this?

that would be cool to try on park skis. Rocker the tips for rail jams and playing around on boxes, and then go back to camber for hucking jump lines.

yeah but you can set the tips and tails separately for ultimate customization- I am thinking rope (maybe a better material like rubber so there is a give in flex if you catch a tip) with something like a slap ratchet for quick adjustments on the go.

LOL

and boots that you get in from the back, so they are easier to put on.

and skis with no sidecut, so they slide through moguls better.

Snowboard boot to ski boot adapter: it looks kinda like a snowboard binding, with the straps and supports to hold a snowboard boot in proper riding position. But instead of mounting it to something it has nubs on the front and back that are compatible with ski bindings. Then you can use your favorite snowboard boot for boarding, skiing, and comfy walking around the lodge.

Fischer has kind of done this. Push that yellow tab down and you got rocker.

Its a gimmick item right now though. It doesn't give you enough rocker to notice a difference.

I don't have invention ideas for these problems but here is a list of shit that pisses me off when I ski

1:get lost from friends on resort and takes a fuck ton of time and hopeful cell phone service to reach them. Radios are fucking gay and every gaper can hear you on your channel.

2:Lift lines

3:gapers in the park.

4:Kids and gapers cutting in front of me.

what if for racing skis instead of bindings you used really strong magnets on the skis and boot soles? except they were electro-magnets with a remote controlled kill-switch so if a racer went down at high speeds the coach or whoever had it could hit a button and the skis would just fall off their feet immediately before snagging and injuring the skier?

i dont know, might be a retarded idea because i dont know what the weight would be like, but its something ive always though about. and know im not stoned

I want ski poles with hoollow handles like a survival knife or something. Or if it had a cable lock in the handle, etc. that would be cool if not a little heavy.

Also a fleshlight handle would be nice for those days when the lift lines are long.

^lolbut on a serious note we were thinking of having a switch that would activate and de activate the magnet for the ski poles.

love te ideas, keep them coming

Honestly, this idea will never work. Don't mean to be a debbie downer, or as long as it's just to keep your gloves from falling off the pole ends and into the snow during safety meetings, as the magnet will NEVER be strong enough to hold the poles to your hand. Besides, Leki already has the trigger grip thingies and nobody butracer douches use them anyways.

Also, any kind of switch and elecrtomagnetic dealio will take up a ton of space, be really heavy and also run out of charge in the cold. Also just gimmicky, so unless it could be had for the same price as regular poles, it won't go too far.

I'd look into inside-the-grip storage though with a screw-off cap. For real, I'd buy that! Couple L's in one, lighter in the other? BAM. Instant hit.

thanks for the advise,

this idea is definitly not our final thing we are still looking for more ideas not necesarily related to poles.

that storage idea would be cool tho

i don't know if it already exists or has been mentioned but peeps in your skis that can be used to find skis when they get buried in the pow.

you are stupid. read a fuckin book or something. similar to a fridge magnet big dummy head, could totally work. GOOD IDEA- idea being the key word.
