Skiing in the military

So, in 2 years I'll be going on active duty in the USAF after I graduate from ROTC. I want to see if NS has any veterans on it with stories or hardships of skiing while on active duty. A couple of guys that have graduated since I joined have told me stories of how it's difficult to get time on the hill based on where you're stationed. Just wondering if anyone had some comments on this.

Nb4 anyone asks:

No i'm not a pilot

No I'm not going to call kenny loggins because I'm not in the danger zone

No I'm not the next top gun

It Really depends on where they send you. Some guys luck out and get Italy or west coast state side. My first base was in az so I has to drive 5 hours to ride. Now my base is like 20 min to the lift if I hit all the stop lights on the way to the mtn

just curious what do you do in the service? My stepdad was also in the air force and he said something about going overseas to an overseas base and you could ski and sight see, all that fun stuff. I am going to ask him more about that.

I'm currently stationed at Charleston AFB. The skiing sucks... You just gotta suck it up and pay for a badass vacation... However, in 2012 I was TDY in Rammstein and got to take a few trips down to Soelden Austria, That's where it's at. 3 peaks, a couple glaciers, and a ski tunnel...

Really depends on where you're stationed and your duty position. Company commander? Good luck getting a totally free weekend to take trips. Siggo running the commo shop? You'll be able to get away and ski. You can't call in sick for pow days, but leave in the military is pretty sweet (assuming you can get it approved) so taking longer planned trips shouldn't be too difficult. Regardless of what you do, you'll be able to make time if you want it. The real question is where you're stationed, and that's much harder to control. If you end up at lackland you're boned, but if you're at USAFA, you're less than two hours from summit county.

On another note, listen to your NCO's. Nothing is quite as stupid and dangerous as a 2LT.

Do you still have people in Afganistan? They have mountains as far as I know - talibans hide up in the mountain - first decent Taliban hunt anyone?

There used to be resorts in Afghanistan, and from what I understand they was bomb (see what I did there). When I was in country I used to day dream about getting some turns on the portion of the hindu kush that I could see.

yurps pretty easy to jump on the train and spend your leave gettin after it

the afrs made it cheap at least in garmish

on the other hand my yurp tour was the longest i went w/out fishing

in my life.

My friend's uncle was stationed in Japan during the occupation and they said they'd have down days where they could do whatever so they skiied Fuji when their superior told them not to and each one of them broke a limb.

If Im looking at that picture correctly is that a painting? So awesome would hang that on the wall great ski themed decoration.

This is a day maker. I'm an Army LT and i've spent the last two years in VA and FL hating my life with only ski opportunities in VA. The mid-atlantic shredding was actually an adventure i enjoyed and glad i got to experience. I was dying for Carson Colorado or Drum NY to stay in the scene but then my world got rocked because I found out I was going to GERMANY at the beginning of next year. Shall be off the chain from what I hear. I know I will have no life as a PL but the trips I do get should be epic opportunities.

This should actually be a cult because I know I would keep up on it and because I know there are some Salty old dogs on here that would be great for questions.

I do agree. I knew there would be other guys on here. I never really can tell though. I'm sure theres a huge military presence.

I graduated from the University of NH and did AF ROTC. Spent 7 years active duty and got out to join the national guard. While active duty I always saved my leave for the winter. You get 30 days off a year but you need to take leave if you travel outside of the local area for a ski trip. That included weekends, so it burns 3 days of leave if you ski from friday-sunday. That's incase you get hurt, if you get hurt on a ski trip and aren't on leave you'll get in big trouble. As an officer you have to follow the rules to a T. I spent two years in Germany and did some epic skiing in Europe. BUT...overall I had more days on the slopes every year while going to college in NH than I ever have since I graduated. Sucks but it's life. Good luck.

Totally depends on where you get stationed. I was in the military for ten years. We skied all over. You will have military flights available, use them. Thank you for your service!! Any current active / reserve military or Vet that would like a set of our skis for a "military hookup" email tj@batallaskis.com for info.

This thread is old but oh well I'm on hour 23 of CQ. I spent the last two years in Texas and asscrackistan only able to ski when I came home on leave. I just PCSd to Fort Drum and hate this damn place but at least I can ski. But then I tore my MCL a month ago. So I'm shit outta luck for skiing this season.

But top gun was the Navy. You could still call Kenny Loggins.
