Skiing French Alps on the Cheap

I've been living in Paris for about 8 months now, and was looking for some advice on skiing the french alps on the cheap... I'm a US expat and don't know anyone with chalets or condos, so unfortunately, would need to crash in a hostel or hotel.

Does anyone know of any small/boutique resorts that can still get me the thrills of fresh tracks?

what you looking for in a resort? powder, parks, nightlife?? theres a fair few hostels around the alps..how much you looking at spending too?
