Ski to kidney tear..

a week ago i took a pretty heavy fall. i scorpioned, causing my right ski flew behind me and the tail hit me in my right kidney, completely tearing it in half. its been a rough week and finally all my vitals are stable and the bleeding has all but ceased. im looking at a long road to recovery, doctors estimate between 6-8 months.

for the next several weeks i cant get out of bed. once im able to do that, the only movements im allowed to make are those that get me to class or to the bathroom, hopefully enabling me to finish out my final semester of college.

i havent had much experience with the usual knee surgeries or falls many of us take. im usually an incredibly active individual, and so going from that to no movement whatsoever has been hard to say the least.

do you of you have an experience with an injury like ive sustained? i basically cant move, and the small movements i do make cause agony in my right side. how have you coped with being bedlocked for months at a time? how do you stay entertained? im still in the hospital right now and so im either sitting down or laying down which is honestly starting to feel very uncomfortable. i finally was able to refuse the pain pills today, good in the long run but life in a hospital bed is much more monotonous without them..

any and all advice or ideas appreciated. all i have is time to try them out..

thanks for the well wishes. one of the most painful injuries a human body can sustain, im glad i was able to only take em for a week

I haven't had anything close to what you had done OP. But I had to get jaw surgery a few years ago and was completely wired shut for 6 weeks. Couldn't talk or eat anything solid, was horrible. Although I was able to at least be active, aka I could play golf, I couldn't do much else.

I ended up picking up a video game and played that religiously. Also if you haven't watched many HBO series, you could get an HBOGO account, and you will literally have more shows than you could imagine to watch.

GL on your recovery.

I tore my spleen/bruised my kidney earlier this season, ending it early. However, it sounds like my injury was significantly less severe than yours. I was in the hospital for 6 days and was bedridden the whole time. I'm at 6 weeks since the accident and I'm living a fairly normal lifestyle, just gotta avoid skiing/any hit or fall to my left side for a few more weeks.

I'm assuming your recovery will have lifting limits and cardio limits? (I was told not to lift more than a gallon of milk and to keep my heart rate low for a month.)

as for stuff to do during your recovery:

-get a netflix account if you don't have one

-learn to play guitar (or another instrument)

-learn a foreign language

-become an NS troll

-learn to knit/crochet and make yourself some baller homemade gear for next season

-doodle/paint

-videogames (obviously)

-write short stories, poems, raps, or even a recovery blog

thanks for the ideas bomber n randy. ive been watching a lot of netflix. i havent been in a state of mind where i can really read of think too hard yet. im hoping in the next week or two that changes and im able to focus on a bit more mental activity at that point.

the whole business about virtually no activity for the next 3 months is daunting. right now i can barley hobble to the bathroom..

Holy shit man, you fucked up big on that one. Recover quickly.

I never had an accident. I dont want one either. Maybe with all these injuries, maybe slack off a little on the stunts?

Thats really shitty, you'd almost think it would be easier if they just removed the damn kidney. I hope you a fast recovery, vibes!

thanks again for all the vibes all. finally getting out of the hospital tomorrow. pains more managable, im able to eat real food again and im up and walking.

the doctors are telling me in about 6 months i should be near healed, but the hardest part is hearing for the next year or so no contact sports...skiing being one of these. i never want to go through what i jsut went through again, but im seriously fuckin bummed on hearing that.

hopefully with enough work and dedication ill be back for next season. bad thing about an organ injury is theres no real way to strengthen it besides time.

oh and for anyone interested in what this looks like:
