Ski shop broke my pivots

I took my skis into my local shop where I got them mounted to get my pivots looked at because I was feeling a little bit of boot movement in the bindings and I’d rather have them do a torque test and make sure they’re dialed. Today I get a call that my heel piece sheared off and they were asking if I wanted to buy another set so they could do a remount. I drove over there and sure enough, my shit was completely detached. The kid that broke them initially offered to just replace the heel piece using the existing holes but the owner shot that down real quick and said I need to buy a full new set so I just grabbed my skis and walked out, to which the owner followed me out to my car and said I still owe $65 for the “calibration fee”. Such a fucking joke.

I’m sure it’s possible that the turntable was cracked underneath the little plate and I just couldn’t see it, but like gahhhhhdamn. Those are pretty much my only skis rn and apart from the tiny bit of wiggle room I’ve been skiing them as-is without issues. Am I unreasonable for expecting the shop to make it right? And do I have any hope for any warranty assistance from Look? Pretty bummed:(

Even if the crack was already there, they were still a whole lot more skiable than they are now. The owner didn’t seem to agree tho.

If the crack was already visibly there then any decent tech wouldn’t work on them. They would have showed you the crack and made it clear if we work on these there is a chance they will snap. Based off what you’ve said it sounds like your bindings were already cracked, but the shop owner let some newb work on them and broke them. Now he’s trying to push the blame on you.

That shop owner sounds like a piece of work.

Make sure to leave a Google Maps review so other skiers don't run into this mess.

Things can always go wrong in the shop. The technician had the right instinct: look for an acceptable solution together with the customer. They should have offered you a nice discount on new bindings and waived any fees. It always amazes me how some shop owners fail to see the bigger picture of good customer service.
 
sorry i gotta say, if i had to guess, the baseplate was already fucked if he was able to break it just by messing with it. did he make a mistake or strong-arm it, idk maybe, but i really doubt it was fine and he broke it. skiing on something puts a hell of a lot more stress on it than some shop worker messing around with it. i think your binding was toast and he had the misfortune of being the one to discover it

it sucks, i get it, so maybe you should buy a baseplate only and find a good/chill shop or friend to mount it

I emailed them on separate occasions for a single heel piece and then for a set of brakes only, both times I had the parts within three days and it was cheaper than buying from anywhere else ($50)
 
Sometimes stuff breaks man, I have warrantied two different sets of Pivots from Look and had nothing but wonderful experiences. Sounds like you have reached out curious to see what they say

Yeah kinda, probably a little over a year old now.

I got a warranty claim submitted with Rossi. Gonna try to get a new plate assembly overnighted since I’m driving out to colorado as soon as Im done with finals later this week.
 
Idk how the tech would've broke those like that without there being a substantial crack there already, besides pivots break there all the time. HOWEVER it was the shops responsibility while the skis are in their possession to ensure your stuff dosen't break for whatever reason. And if it does break the shop should at the bare minimum refund the cost of the work. What I would've done is just swap a lower assembly from a stock pivot. That way the customer leaves happy and any part sourcing is done by the shop, who on principle should absorb that cost anyway

sweet^ i was just about to post that the warranty process was pretty smooth for me, although i would Not recommend mounting in the same holes. go a couple of cm forward or backward and mount with fresh holes... i mounted my skis backwards a little bit "forward"... so when im going backwards, im actually skiing the best performance of the ski,...
 
as far as the shop situation... you do have the upperhand in explaining the warranty situation to the shop owner, and his offer of buying new was salt in a wound...

i on the other hand, picked up my Ibis bike from a shop this summer, with no charge... a new brake lever was installed and my very expensive 29er was sabotaged in a way that ...well, was criminal.

I would absolutely recommend reusing holes. Ive reused holes 3 times on a ski without issues, just need to be careful not to strip the existing threads when you reinstall the binding. Even if you do strip Id helicoil the stripped hole before adding new ones

I recommend drilling holes in the frame to shave some weight. Bikes have way too much material that they only use for "aerodymanics"
 
What shop? You should absolutely name and location drop them so we dont do business with retards.
 
I can always sell you a single baseplate if you only need one so you don't have to buy a pair elsewhere online. Or if you want to buy a pair (which I recommend to anyone whose already broken one pivot part) I'll match evos price so you're supporting a local shop.

of course i drilled out the carbon fiber frame, and yes, i put the shavings under my pillow, and the ibis fairy came and left me a million dollar bill. cheers!
