Hey first post here

Really got into skiing last season and I definitely caught the bug. Copped my first pair of sticks and a seasons pass for this winter (fuck El Niño) and I want to get steezier. Anybody got some suggestions for some tricks or techniques I can practice and get better at this season? I learned how to pop and do a sliding 180 ( not sure the name of it but Its a 180 without leaving the ground) near the end of last season but that’s pretty much all I know. Any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Keep you arms close to your body and never flail. Arm flailing instantly destroys steeze

Alright sick thanks man I’ll keep that in mind going forward

Ski with people that push, support and encourage you to progress. Watch edits, clips of other skiers and figure out what trick, ways you want to do something. Most of all, just go out and have fun! Falling down will happen along with injuries in this sport, just keep at it along with a decent attitude, you will progress quickly.

if you've been tempted to skip using poles, i'd suggest rethinking that. many more advanced skiers can get away without using poles and still ski well and look good. however, if you skip poles as a beginner, i think you're more likely to develop bad habits, especially around turning/carving and arm flailing/wrapping

When you can do tricks so easily that you don’t even have to think about it, you’ll naturally look better. Also watch Jake carney, joona kangas, and Christian francino, there are probably a bunch of threads on here that talk about steezy skiers. Pick skiers you wanna ride like and note how they do tricks. Good luck!

Learning how to ski backwords (switch) will unlock alot for you. Alot of people try grinding rails and 180s early and arent comfortable skiing switch.

Ski with a group of people that are much better/faster than you and who also give you pointers. Ive progessed alot by pushing myself and trying to ski as good as my friends do

Hell ye! Stoked you caught the bug. My advice is less is better, meaning work on a couple of tricks until you get them dialed to the point where it's effortless. Work on that 180 more and eventually the 360 will follow suit. I watched the B&E show growing up and I believe they're the epitome of style and perfectly define the phrase, "less is better."

these two things are what i was going to say. Repetition is key. For example, your first front two will probably look uncomfortable and awkward because that's how it will feel to you. Keep practicing, then the tricks will just start looking better as you get more comfortable with them. Then you start adding your own style to them and doing them in a slightly different way. That's why it's good to watch a lot of skiing and then find out which styles you prefer so that you can try to emulate

those skiers.

I wouldn’t use poles when you start. If you do, you might start to rely on them for stability so when you want to start skiing without them you can’t without struggling. Also, ski with other, better people that know what they’re doing, always work on getting better, and work on solidifying one or two tricks before moving on to more complicated ones. Having a solid foundation is important and it may suck sometimes to not try better tricks, but if you move on before you develop that muscle memory, you will very quickly forget how to do the first trick and it will take you longer to progress overall. Start with 180s, 360s, rails, etc. If you’re not falling you’re not learning.

Ski as much as you can. Thats the biggest thing.

Find some good friends to ski with. If you're solo in your friend group as far as skiing. Talk to some people at the hill. Find some people you're ability level, better yet a little better than you.

Watch some ski movies, stay motivated stay frothing.

The more you get out there and get the reps in the faster you'll progress.

Don't forget to have fun!! If you're going regularly and having fun. Nothing else really matters. That said you will noticeably improve if you keep at it.

Good luck out there! Stay stoked!!

kind of in relation to what abortionator said,

be the worst skier in your group. skiing with those who are better than you makes you such a better skier. the problem is finding people who are better than you who will ski with you (join a freeski team)

Ski with people that are a little bit better than you because they will push you to try new tricks which will make you better. Also try going to your resort as much as you can.

like 20 people have said this already you never add anything to threads

Everyone is saying some good shit but the pole comments are funny. When it comes to poles they are very helpful for learning to initiate turns and work on balance but can keep you from being as comfortable learning tricks and trying to jib since its another thing to get in your way and fall on while spinning around or just goofin.

you will find out which you are more comfortable with but the biggest thing will be learning the tricks that inspire you the most and skiing in a “style” that you feel is best for you.

When I first got into skiing i was inspired byhttps://youtube.com/@thesauceposse7113?si=Nmu8T68v90qny3y6 andhttps://youtube.com/@simonknight3723?si=EYp985njncb6T2cl because they were local skiers who had good vibes great stee and were super helpful anytime i had questions about learning tricks.

While arms close and feet together are good starting places; I think a lot of style comes from the individual. Throwing a trick the same as someone else because it looked dope will help you learn but causes plateaus. Try and make tricks your own; when you're mid trick, you'll know when something is going to look sick just by the way it feels. Find how you flow while skiing.

If I piss you off then dont look at what I say its that simple. You're the one that is always coming to me and complaining. I dont always say what others say but keep doing what your doing ?

great points man appreciate it. Really relate to your comment on injuries, last season when I was just starting out I went way too fast for my own good and fucked my knee cause of bad falling technique. Also doesn’t help that My legs are sorta skinny so I didn’t have too much muscle to protect le knees. Apart from squats do you have any suggestions for exercises I can do to minimize the potential knee injuries that can occur?

Totally agree man. I’m definitely not sick enough for no poles yet lmao. Random question but is there any benefit to putting the poles parallel to the ground out to the side like some of guys in xgames big air do when going for the jump?

Learn lip on blind 2s

ski fast

Just searched that and gotta say sheesh those are tight. I guess skills needed for those are the ability to hit rails and air awareness and Ofc the 270?

Honestly facts. that’s what I did for most of last season and think it’s the reason I can hit blacks now without getting sketched.

Copy that boss! I think I’ve decided what I’m gonna work on this season is definitely skiing switch and then hitting aerial180s then once I got those down I can get saucier. You think for getting better at moving around in the air that I should hit small jumps off park or hit side hits on runs? Appreciate the help bro

Aight sick. I think for the time being I’ll use poles but will definitely take your advice on not learning too many tricks at once. Appreciate it man

Alright dope thanks man. Definitely like the nonchalant style I’ve been seeing some guys do but I guess that just comes with crazy repetition. Appreciate the response Batman!

No doubt! I'd say both will def help. Side hits are a little less intimidating but I think you should be trying both at the same time. It's been said a lot throughout this thread but repetition is the key to success in skiing and most activities. That's why Mid-West homies are fucked up good at rails because they are hitting the same feature multiple times at a quick rate (rope tows are helpful for this). Good luck out there, solider!

Yenno that was part of the reason I Bought the seasons pass, to make me go regularity so that the constant cost of day passes doesn’t dissuade me from going. Luckily I got a couple boys who’ve been skiing their whole life who’ve taken me under their wing. There’s been times they took me through some seriously ridiculous runs (to me) through trees and hitting the occasional accidental cliff too. Definitely times I want to take the skis off and walk down but mama ain’t raise no bitch so I just send it. Totally the reason I’ve progressed so fast though. But fuck ya that’s good to hear! If anyone visits cypress in vancouver and wants to link up lmk.appreciate the help man!

thanks for the response SteezyYeeter (love the name)

Okay sweet thanks man. Once I get to the point where I can actually hit these tricks I’ll definitely think about what I can do to “make them my own”. Appreciate the response bro
