I have decided to take a year off before college, and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good deals where you can get free lodging or cheap lodging by working for the mountain or other jobs to support skiing. I think alta has free employee housing, is that true?

theres a place in whistler ... i saw it in the paper ... u get free lodging and stuff .. you run the front desk of some lodge... but don't think much experience is needed

I think most resorts have a lot of employee acommodation - I think they have too by law because rental costs are so high.

Anything that's for the mountain (lifty, ticket sales etc) will get you a free seasons pass.

I know at Whistler that heaps of jobs provide staff accomodation - even the supermarket ! So you could be a checkout-dude and get a place to live as part of the deal !!!

I guess you wanna try and get a job that gives you free time during the day. Shops/restraunts are usually good like that.

Go really early in the season - maybe before it even starts, because then you'll get the best pick of the jobs and they go fast.

Really, the 2 biggest skiing expenses are lift ticket and accomodation, so if you can get a job that includes either or both, it'll make life a bit easier,

But go for it !!

do you have to pay for the lodging though, cause on whistler's website you have to pay, same with everywhere else I have looked.

dude look at the a-basin site if you work there you ski for free at a ton of places in CO. and i think they have discounted stuff a bunch of stuff for employees. there is a whole section on the site though

Where does all the white go when the snow melts?

I'm like a chocoholic, but for alcohol

Just as a guideline I spent this winter working at Heavenly. Their staff accom worked out to like $50-55 a week, living with 4-6 others. You get paid minimum wage, but you got a free lift pass (obviously) and discounts to most of the fields in Tahoe. Like Squaw was only $28 for a full day lift pass. Plus shit like 50% off skis/bindings, 20-30% off anything else, and free puplic transport around Tahoe.

Check out Breckenridge. My buddy did what you are doing last year. I would say just go and look at the website or something

go to Whistler brah, just work in a bar and send people crappy expensive drinks and crap like that, then you'd make heaps of cash and be able to move to NZ and ski with the phatt man himself. and how cool would that be. methinks pretty darn cool. Or move to NZ and work, they're always looking for people to work down here, it's all good, you'd pick up a job no worries, boomshamyshamyshanka

did you make any money? did you mean 50 split between the 4 of you or by yourself. Sounds pretty fun though

I'm doing that next year... haven't quite worked it out yet. I don't even know where I wanna go yet. Is it very hard (I know there's been a ton of threads on this but I don't wanna go back through 'em) to get a job in whistler if you're American?

Oh thank heavens, for JIBBER girls... 'cause jibber girls go BIGGER every day.

Staff housing here in Whistler is totally ghetto but it's super cheap (well I've heard Brio is ok). Plus if you luck out like me you end up living with two french girls :)

Yeah, it's only like $240 for a shared room and $380 for a single.

Is that per month? is it easy to get a good job though? How much do you make a month on average? Thanks a lot

I dunno what the specifics were for staff housing cause I didn't stay there, I was in some hotel for the 3 months. That was like $960 per month, regardless of how many were staying in the room. So the more people we got..the cheaper it was. That included all utilities.

If you luck out on staff housing theres heaps of hotels looking for seasonal people, which you'll probaly pay no more than $80 a week for.

Thats also the best idea if you wanted to work at Sierra @ Tahoe or Kirkwood, cause they have staff shuttles for South Lake Tahoe.

What gravity?

Just be careful at Whistler, I have heard stories how people from the US can have difficulty getting jobs up in there. Personally, I think I do the high class ski-bumming gig at Sunday River... Work in the Marketing department, work on the website, live in Bethel. Yes, I am in college. I work during my college breaks!
