Ski Finder Excel Sheet

I made a thread on this a while back and now I've decided I'm going to try it. For those who don't know about it this is what Im going to do: Using Excel I'm going to make a spreadsheet as many skis from different companies as I can make. It will have a section for dimensions (tip/underfoot/tails), a section for stiffness, length, and whatever else would be helpful. If you would like to help post here or send me a message, I might create a cult for it.

If you arent planning on helping I would still really like to know if you would want this though, so I'm not wasting a bunch of my time.

+K for bumps and feedback

It might be cool if NS would end up putting it somewhere on their site. Maybe sticky it in the gear talk section. I feel like a few months ago someone was trying to do the same thing you were doing. Hopefully someone remembers.

use google documents so it can be read and even edited by different people!

you can chose who can edit it I believe and set permissions, etc. So OP would have control, but he could let someone add to it if he felt confident with them

that's a great idea. have a different tab for each year's model.

I like the idea of a google document for everyone to add to. if this got big, ski companies themselves would unquestionably have a marketing rep upload the information themselves.

Open source is the future.

I don't know much about Google Documents, but I'll try to look into that. I'm used to be good with excel but if Google is a lot better I would use it.

I think I will assign people each a different brand to get all of their ski info or maybe just like 5 skis a person.

Not like this will change the fact that I'm doing this, but could we get a sponsorship from the companies or something like that? That would be sweet.

allowing anyone to edit a spreadsheet like this is a terrible idea if you want it to actually work. if you want this sheet to have any cool functionality like lookup features, etc., then you're going to want to protect it. otherwise someone will fuck up the formulas and it won't work at all. i see it happen all of the time. not with a ski spreadsheet, of course, but with other excel files that i work with on a daily basis.

i'm picturing something where you could open the spreadsheet and choose a set of variables such as pow ski, park ski, etc., flex pattern, enter your height, weight, price range, and the spreadsheet will pull up a list of skis that fit those parameters. this would have to be protected though because if someone went in and overwrote a formula, then the entire sheet becomes useless. guaranteed to happen. it's just too complex and too many people don't know dick about excel.

it would be awesome if you could then sort the categories high/low with the dimensions, prices, etc, and also set ranges, but I dont think you can do that in excel. Also, you should put in MSRP. +k for awesome idea

this is totally possible. excel has some crazy capabilities if you know what youre doing. i dont have time to gather all of the data, but if someone can assemble the data, then i can design a spreadsheet that will basically do anything you want it to.
