Ski detune

I just need info on detuning my skis. I have brand new arv 96s but now that i’m getting into harder tricks i should really detune them. No idea how and don’t want to ruin my skis. Someone drop some info.

You really only need a metal file & a gummy/diamond stone or something like that to polish it/smooth out the bumps from the file. I’d also suggest just detuning underfoot the whole ski would be od

@DominatorJacques has an epic park tune video but I couldn't track it down in a brief search. If I recall it runs a couple hours, has a really chill relaxing Bob Ross like quality to it and is worthwhile.

i highly recommend using gummy stone. Use it with kinda round motion against the angle of the edge, so you get smooth and even finish.

Detune lightly first and go skiing to test it out, you can always detune more but can't go back

so no file only gummy stone?

No need for file, gummy stone is enough even though it takes a bit more time and effort

I would disagree for rails. Gummy only is great for softening tips and tails and polishing spots where burrs are removed. For heavy rails you'll really want the edge rounded over under the binding area.

[tag=189437]@DominatorJacques[/tag] Do you have any vids handy?

If your doing requests and at some time, have free time, a video with a bigger base bevel that allows to have some edge hold and carvability, but able to hit rails without eating shit would be awesome.

Yeah this is a good point, if you’re skiing rails all day using a file to detune works wonders for edge life.

OP, you need to take a minute and think honestly how much rail skiing you’ll really be doing. If it’s a lot, detune with a file but know you won’t have a whole lot of edge control on harder snow

I’m not park rat to say. I ski 50/50 park to piste ratio. I have wets for when i want to go hard in the park but bought them used and they were already detuned. I want these to preform all around the mountain and on rails but i won’t be hitting rails all day. maybe i will lightly file and then gummy stone them.

For rails, it's all about the "Long Base Bevel". The base bevel needs to extend into the base plastic about 2 mm or so.

1 degree works fine, but one could go 1.5 I think 2.0 might be overkill.

Here is the video. I warn you it is 5+ hours long, but through You Tube 2x speed it's shorter!

It's long because it's a long story..............I show every repetitive step........start to finish.

A coarser crosscut bastard file would have helped to make the base bevel quicker. Plastic is hard to cut with a finer file.

This is pretty much a race ski preparation, just with a "Long Base Bevel" Read video description at YT.

Truly, it's very long, but I did my best to keep it entertaining. Good to watch on big screen with friends while you party.

Thanks.

Nah man, i ski 95% rails and i only use gummy stone to detune. It takes a bit more work but it's all good and results are smooth

I had a shop detune my Armada T Halls. Never again. They made my underfoot like a tube. Yes, it was great for rails but I loved skiing those skis all mountain AND park. Was terrifying on Icey days.

i used a gummy stone. My edges don’t seem round but the feel smoother and less sharp. I can’t really see any changes either. I only used a gummy. Should i keep going more or is that good

Here you go.

Didn’t detune my edges enough on new skis. I caught my edges twice yesterday and even got thrown off a tube Ass over tits trying to spin off it. I caught my back inside Edge trying to set the rotation. Got a nice chunk out of the topsheet too

my 2019? revolt 95s has somewhat of an sharp edge left somehow, and are beat to hell, the edges are literally starting go SMEAR into sharp edges on them, still not goner, and topsheet is lookin OK minus ish. kinda surprised.

I could see that. I had to work way harder to detune my revolt edges than I expected. As a side note, these skis are really fun so far. First pair of völkls I’ve ever had.
